Understand the numbers - Make better decisions...

I do have a few years (decades) of experience in the field - and many moons ago I completed most of the coursework for Ph.d. in accounting before deciding academia was not where I wanted to be. I taught the subject at the University level for more than 5 years and now train on this subject internationally. My background also includes working as an auditor and many years wearing the corporate controllers hat. I say this because I want to make clear that this book is not just for beginners, or people without a background in the field.

I recommend this book to everyone. Accounting and finance are not easy subjects especially if you jump in and start with the technical aspects of it. Put simply the better you understand the numbers - the better your business decisions will be. I view this book as providing an excellent foundation - the more you build your core knowledge of the subject the better. Remember the key in business is making better business decisions - don't be overly impressed by people who can spout GAAP at you with in terms you don't understand. The real experts can, and should, be able to translate the rules in a fashion that aids in understanding (1) why the rule is there in the first place, and (2) how it impacts you business and the decisions it makes.

This book is written in a fashion that will not put even non-accountants to sleep and it paints enough pictures with examples of accounting misdeeds to keep it interesting - and to really drive home how seemingly innocuous (in some cases) changes to how transactions are recorded and paint a very different picture of the health of an organization.

If you are in business / work - do yourself, your future and your business a favor by increasing your understanding of the numbers. This book is a great place to start....

Must read for all employees at all levels...

i don't normally write reviews but i have to say this is the best financial book i've ever read...i have spent the past 15 or so years at the coo level with finance reporting to me...and while i'm financially savvy, i have no formal financial education...i'm a believer that finance, like any profession or industry, gets bogged down in its own set of acronyms and language...that in and of itself creates the silos too often found in organizations...sales has it, marketing has it, hr has it, etc...etc...

i always try to break down barriers and most of my time is spent as a translator...truth be told, i've always struggled with translating the financial lingo...this book did it for me and has helped me paint a picture and tell the story behind it so everyone understands...

kudos to the authors!!!

Best place to start your finance education!

Great book to introduce you to the key concepts of finance, as they apply to every person in a company. If you're working in finance, you likely already know this information, but if you're in any other department, it is the perfect book. Easy to read, easy to understand, and I have been able to apply the ideas right away. I wish this was the introductory text in MBA programs - great place to start, as finance is, more than anything, a language. I am in sales and found the ideas a great reminder of how to position the financial value of by products. I encourage anyone who wants to get ahead in their job to read this, and then think about your company and how to apply the ideas. In this day and age, financial intelligence is critical to getting ahead!

plumbing for not dummys

I am studying to take my journeyman's plumbing test in Maryland and was very happy to find this book in stock as most places do not carry this item . one thing to keep in mind is that right now most test are using an older version of this book and you would not be able to bring this book into the test with you as such . But I have been told that later this year all test will be focused on this book so I wanted to get a head start . also keep in mind most testing facilities will not let you bring in a book that has any marking on it at all , so don't use your highlighter on it . the book is very well written and very clear , having the extra guide with it is nice too .

Ordered this book for My Massachusetts CSL exam. Passed my exam this past week. Very good companion book to the IBC and IRC.
this with the osha book are definitely the best ways to study for the CSL exam here in massachusetts.

this book is softcover, it was delivered promptly and helped me pass my CSL exam here in massachusetts.
has all of the chapters and pairs well with the IRC book for covering all of the building codes of construction.
I recommend buying it used if you can find a used option. you are going to put some wear on it if you are using it for construction.

Excellent except...

I found the transcriptions very accurate and give it 5 stars for that, but there are a couple of things you should be aware of before purchasing:

1. To get all the parts on a page, they made the type rather small. This is probably only a concern to those of us that were alive when the album was first released and are now wearing bifocals.

2. If you look closely at the title on the book, you'll see "Selections From". Songs from the album that were missing from the book are: Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, All Down the Line, Stop Breaking Down, and Shine a Light.

I don't want to discourage you from choosing this book. It's very good and you'll really enjoy learning this great selection of tunes from an excellent album.

Buyer Beware

Buyer beware...this item is falsely advertised. It is actually "Selections from Exile on Main Street" and not the complete score. Whomever made the 'selections' is an idiot, in my opinion, as they left the best songs out. It's like buying a painting and sections of it are missing. It is beyond me why the integrity of a work of art like this album would be messed with in this manner and sold as complete. This product is a complete falsehood. Do not buy this garbage!

About the Author
Simon Kuper's first book, Football Against the Enemy, won the 1994 William Hill Sports Book of the Year prize and is widely acknowledged as one of football's seminal books. This is a good book. One that most any fan should consider ...

This is a good book. One that most any fan should consider for their reading list.

It does have a few problems, and a number of the conclusions the authors reach have gaping logical flaws. Specifically, they spend considerable time (correctly) reminding readers that there is a difference between causation and correlation, yet they proceed to make the exact same mistake on multiple occassions, particularly as relates to salary vs. transfer investment, a core discussion point of the book. They also spend a quite exhaustive (and frankly nauseating) amount of time explicitly making the point that this book is the soccer version of "Moneyball". The entire first chapter is basically a ham-fisted advertisement for this claim.

But those are the complaints. There are many good reasons to read this--- it is engaging in its narrative, and educational even to those already familiar with many of the concepts. And the anecdotal evidence (often a weakness in books of this genre) is actually mouthwateringly good.... many tidbits that simply aren't part of the mainstream coverage of the sport, even for those who geek heavily on soccer blogs.

Probably, this is "must read" if you really study the global game. But you will take umbrage with some of the conclusions. Maybe that's normal-- we all have a unique passion for the beautiful game.

Highly recommended, fun book for soccer fans

I finished this book (400+ page) within 2 weeks as part-time reading. As a trained data analyst and recent convert soccer fan following Bundesliga for one full season, this book is quite fascinating as it has combined my profession and hobby! My satisfaction derives partly from the fact that I understand most of the statistical techniques described. For a person who is not number-savvy, some explanations in the book may look clueless and even daunting.

This book walked a right balance between funny description of soccer history (mainly European side) and data-driver conclusion on several myths, although most league-related data are from English Premier League. The conclusions on transfer market, profit of hosting a World Cup, even fan psychology (esp. related to suicide) are worth reading, but being a data analyst myself, I would like to caution the certainty of any form of regression analysis. It also gave a good history on how data mindset is slowly getting into the soccer field - much like MoneyBall in MLB.

The most useful and solid country-related conclusion: England should never lament itself as "underachiever" - which is actually some residual of the "imperial manifest destiny" complex. Instead, it should go into any tournament understanding it is a second-tier team, if not 3rd-tier. The recent EURO 2016 also testified this conclusion: England was beaten by Iceland in the Round of 16.

Highly recommend for readers who would like to know more about soccer, fans and countries, esp. those with basic literacy of advanced mathematics. I did check FIFA and UEFA websites while reading to see if they have data analysts vacancy open :-)

Wanted to enter into a realm that was foreign to me

From the description of the chapbook, I was initially highly intrigued for living in the Western world. I wanted a glimpse of how life and ideas varied from my own. Unfortunately, a glimpse was all I received. Let me explain.

For praise, this book is gleaming with sentimentalism, which can either attract or repulse a reader. I'm very analytical when I come across this genre for I desire the sublimity that comes from those poems that are not cliche. I really enjoyed the poems Intuition and Reader's Soul. For the former, I felt had the strongest metaphors and a turn that really darkened the mood. The latter seemed to tell me the author's influence which was relieving.

For critique, I felt these poems were more into the narrative realm and would fit better within a memoir than poetry. The diction/metaphors/allusions were elementary for the most part and the scenes which I hoped for to be a window into the writer's world became terribly too familiar. The estranged lover motif and short quotatitive pieces also became redundant. The vagueness/ambiguity took away from the intended message. For example, Welkin seems to be the focus of the writer's society, or at least an impressionable event that occurred, yet I was left asking for more. If I was supposed to reconnect what was being said, I just couldn't figure it out.

Overall, I hope this review helps the writer to realize that originality, identity of culture/society, and a better grasp of poetic elements would've made this chapbook more desired.

The first time, I read it slowly and thoughtfully.
I had to stop after one or another because I wanted to cherish the feelings it caused, some of them hard to digest. The author describes beautifully scenes, feelings and thoughts sometimes with short sentences , other times with longer poems without a fear about not so common topics.
A real treasure to have in your bookshelf...

About the Author

Yang Jisheng was born in 1940, joined the Communist Party in 1964, and worked for the Xinhua News Agency from January 1968 until his retirement in 2001. He is now a deputy editor at Yanhuang Chunqiu (Chronicles of History), an official journal that regularly skirts censorship with articles on controversial political topics. A leading liberal voice, he published the Chinese version of Tombstone in Hong Kong in May 2008. Eight editions have been issued since then.Yang Jisheng lives in Beijing with his wife and two children.

Translator Bio:

Stacy Mosher learned Chinese in Hong Kong, where she lived for nearly 18 years. A long-time journalist, Mosher currently works as an editor and translator in Brooklyn.

Guo Jian is Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Originally trained in Chinese language and literature, Guo was on the Chinese faculty of Beijing Normal University until he came to the United States to study for his PhD in English in the mid-1980's.

Sophisticated and well-documented analysis of China's post 1949 history

Recently I read a short review of this work in the New York times, and then to my surprise saw this 629 page book on the Chinese Famine of 1958-61 in my local bookstore. I thought, who would buy it? I did graduate study in Chinese History, speak Chinese, and lived in China in 1982. Now I am not in the China field. The topic is interesting to me, so I bought it and read it over the weekend. I was very pleasantly surprised.

It's true that the writer's intention was to document the effects of the Great Leap Forward objectively, but I was also pleased that he was not afraid to draw conclusions and penetrate to the heart of the issue: Every major communist regime, the Soviet Union, the PRC, Cambodia, Vietnam, North Korea etc. caused mass starvation in the initial period when their zeal was high and they sought to get an iron grip on the population by controlling the food supply. The problem with these regimes is systemic; the suffering was not the result of "natural disasters" or "isolated abuses." Totalitarian systems have big problems pulling off mid-course corrections. They are not responsive to feedback until they go beyond the brink. In those systems everyone is a slave to their superiors and often they are also tyrants to those below them in the pecking order. The only way to prevent this from happening again is to educate the populace (stop calling them peasants) and gradually transition to openness and democracy.

Other things that the writer brought out that I think people should realize:
- Despite the depiction of the Communist movement as a "peasant movement," the regime caused great suffering among the farmers, killing more people than the Japanese invaders (1937-1945).
- The local cadres rode hard over the rural population to please their superiors, and then when the policy changed, got the blame for the problems. How ironic!
- The regime took great pains to hide the problems it created, and many Western scholars or politicians (the earlier Edward Friedman? Nixon? Kissinger?) and journalists were fooled. However, some brave analysts did pick up on this early on. The first book on this specific topic was written by Jasper Becker, a journalist who I have never met but respect very much. It's not true that no one knew about this until China opened up after 1989 -- some people just want to believe fairy tales and close their eyes to unpleasant facts.

I recommend this book, with the caveat that the non-specialist reader should not get too bogged down in the details. Sometimes the writer proves his point in one chapter, and then repeats the point in more chapters that are just the same story set in different locations. For specialists the details will be interesting but the general reader may want to skim over some parts, and focus on the analysis which I think is outstanding.

I read the original Chinese version, so this review is not about the translation quality of the book, but rather the content. And what a heavy content it is. This book is probably the most comprehensive body of work on the subject of the Great Chinese Famine to date. For those who has never heard of The Famine (and that makes for most people, since it is closely guarded by the CCP as part of their shameful history), it is a period from 1958-1962 where an estimated 36 million Chinese died of un-natural causes, all during peace time from ONE country. In comparison, the total number of civilian deaths in WWII from ALL combatant nations is estimated to be between 37 to 54 million. If you add in the number of reduced births (when people are starving they tend not to give birth), estimated at 40 million, then the total population reduction exceeds civilian war deaths in WWII.

This book represents nearly two decades of meticulous research by the author, who was a reporter from the New China News Agency, with access to restricted documents and living survivors. He conducted his research under the pretense of "researching farming policies in early years of PRC", and painstakingly pieced together birth/death statistics from multiple provinces heavily impacted by the famine. He also interviewed survivors, who gave live testimonies and names of the deceased and cause of death. The length of investigation, the thoroughness and above all, the author's dedication, is exemplary journalism rarely seen in today's world, let alone in China.

The topic of The Great Famine is rarely talked about in China, and thoroughly hidden in history books as a period of "Great Difficulty". It is an open secret in the Chinese society, with many people who'd rather forget about the whole affair (and it is nearly forgotten, since adult witnesses at the time are now all in their 70's or 80's), instead of asking the hard question "how could a government that staged such tragedy be allowed to stay in power still?", and more importantly, "what does this say about such government and it's policies?". The answers to those questions are very much relevant today, as the Chinese state continues to expand with little regard to the environment, the health of its citizens, or their rights as human beings.

"Those who forgot the past is doomed to repeat it". As the next generation of Chinese matures and take over the helm, it is especially important to remember this dark period in history, so such human tragedy will not be allowed to repeat itself.

The most comprehensive, accurate and authoritative on the subject

I'm a native Chinese and grew up in that sad period in China's history. I have relatives in the countryside who almost perished if it weren't for the money wired by my parents. For various reasons, my family was much better off on the hunger scale but still my father was reduced to about 100 pounds for a man 5'5" tall and my mother's menstrual periods were stopped for many months.

Just like in Orwell's 1984, the horrible history was covered up, distorted and re-written in whatever way to suit the need of regime. As the result, few fully understand their own past, much less the big picture. To understand my own country's history, I had to look in the books available outside China for the answers. I had read Hungry Ghosts: China's Secret Famine by Jasper Becker and Mao's Great Famine by Frank Dikoetter. I had read Man-made Disaster (in Chinese) by DING, Shu and countless personal stories. Then I read Tombstone (in Chinese) by Jisheng YANG and found it the best written, most comprehensive on the subject. I'm very glad it has been translated into English. I haven't read the English version yet. But if the translation does justice to the book, the reader should gain tremendous insight into the cause, the scale and the consequence of the huge man-made disaster.

About the Author
Professor Whitbourne received her Ph. D. from Columbia University and has dual specializations in life-span developmental psychology and clinical psychology. She has taught at the State University of New York at Geneseo and the University of Rochester. At the University of Massachusetts, she received the University's Distinguished Teaching Award and the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award. In 2002, she received the Florence Denmark/Psi Chi National Faculty Advisor Award and in 2003, the APA Division 20 (Adult Development and Aging) Master Mentor Award . She is the Honors Coordinator in the Psychology Department and the Director of the Office of National Scholarship Advisement in the newly established Commonwealth Honors College. The author of fourteen books and over one hundred journal articles and book chapters, Professor Whitbourne is regarded as an expert in the field of personality development in adulthood and old age. She is currently the APA Council Representative of Division 20 of APA having also served as Division 20 President. Professor Whitbourne has developed nationally recognized approaches to technological innovations in teaching, and the web site she developed for her introductory psychology course was selected as a McGraw-Hill Web Cafe "Site of the Month."

Professor Halgin received his Ph. D. from Fordham University, and completed a 3-year fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, prior to joining the faculty of the University of Massachusetts in 1977. He is a Board Certified Clinical Psychologist and has had over two decades of clinical, supervisory, and consulting experience. At the University of Massachusetts, his course in Abnormal Psychology is one of the most popular offerings on campus, attracting an enrollment of more than 500 students each semester. In recent years, he has also offered this course at Amherst College and Smith College. His teaching has been recognized at the university and national level. A University of Massachusetts Alumni Distinguished Professor, he was honored with the University's Distinguished Teaching Award and his teaching was recognized by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology of the American Psychological Association. In April 2003, his teaching was highlighted in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Professor Halgin is the author of more than fifty journal articles and book chapters in the fields of psychotherapy, clinical supervision, and professional issues in psychology.

You will waste your time just to find out that it actually will not. $180 from Amazon with NO online Connect access $110 direct from McGraw-Hill with connect access

BEWARE Book Stopped Working FInals Week!

BEWARE!! I rented this book for a full semester and in the last week of the rental, also my finals week for school, the book stopped working on all my devices. I called amazon and was informed that the Kindle app updated to windows 8 and the book was not compatible with the update and the textbook was not available for the new updated Kindle app. Amazon refunded me the full price of the book which was nice but, I was screwed the last week of my semester with no textbook to study for finals. I will definitely think twice before renting another digital textbook anywhere, especially through Kindle.

The joys of textbook buying

I had to purchase this new edition for my Clinical and Abnormal class this fall semester. I understand the need to update this textbook because the updated DSM-5. My gripe is with the shipping: "Usually ships within 1 to 3 weeks." School starts for the CSU system August 26th so I had to purchase 1 day shipping which costs about $20 extra. With the textbook being $142.50 to begin with my total ended up being over $160 with tax...FOR ONE BOOK, FOR ONE CLASS (I'm taking 5 classes this semester so imagine if they all were that amount). Even with the 1 day shipping the estimated delivery is AUGUST 14, 2013 - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2013 BY 8:00PM (I ordered it August 5). So for me it should work out (even if it is delivered on the 28th, I am missing only 2 days with it). But if you need this book for your psych class and haven't ordered it yet, you could be without the textbook for up to 3 weeks and that is just not acceptable. I'm sure the content is well written, easy to understand, and accurate, but the updates better be worth the price.

Also just a side note: I had to purchase this new because of the updates and my professor insisted we get the new one, but I almost never purchase new textbooks. It's a rip off and college students have enough expenses to deal with. Please rent your textbooks and save yourself a lot of money.

UPDATE AUG 19: I decided to cancel my order and order it from a different site because they notified me it would take longer to deliver than they expected and it would not have arrived on time.

About The Burglar With Very Smelly Feet.
Boss and Wife, the loving owners of Morgie and Peej decide to go away for the weekend to a nice hotel for a break. They ask Britney to come and look after Morgie and Peej. She is a nice girl who works with Wife but she keeps company with this strange character, Robbo, who unbeknown to her to is wanted by the Police for the burglary of dozens of homes.
When Britney arrives at the house with Robbo for dinner a few days before Boss and Wife's holiday, the dogs take an instant dislike to him and his stinky feet. They instinctively do not trust him and feel he is up to no good.
The night that Britney is supposed to dog-sit she gets diverted and the dogs end up home alone.
The get hungry and so Morgie figures out a unique way of opening cans of their favourite lamb and vegetable stew dog food (a very useful technique if you are a dog).
That same night Robbo, tries to break into the house with intentions of stealing some valuables.
Morgie and Peej, while defending the house, have to find a way of letting Boss know that they are alone and that things are not as they should be. Of course all works out well in the end and Morgie and Peej are able to help the Police identify Robbo as the wanted burglar.
These is a happy humorous story that has been crafter around the 5 to 10 age group but will be suitable for a much wider range of readers.
The social messages conveyed in this book are valuable life lessons for kids of all ages.
The author, Jane Meadows has created some memorable characters that children will love. Illustrator Mallory Anderson has once more demonstrated her great talents with her beautiful and whimsical full color illustrations.

A Lighthearted Story Perfect for New Readers

While I'm sure I'm not a target demographic for this type of story, I have to say that this story is very well written with very funny and interesting characters. The illustrations are all kinds of adorable as well. You really can't beat this one!

OMG PUPPIES!

I work with elementary school aged children, and I know that they would love this! I wish it would publish on paper, so I could show them the cute pictures of these really cool hounds. They would be ESTACTIC! Great book for kiddos!

This story is good for children who are just starting to learn to read. The main characters are all memorable, especially Robbo, but who could forget his smell. children who love dogs will love these two.
