Bad publication of a good book. Pity
By gene
An editorial board (or perhaps it's just the one editor) who can't bother to get the spelling of the TITLE on the COVER PAGE right isn't interested in doing his/her job. I regret getting this edition even though I support what book surge is doing. This is the second book I've gotten on the boorsurge list, and the first (Sara Teasdale's Poetry Collection doesn't even bother have a contents page with proper listing of the poems.

The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, by Bill James

When Bill James published his original Historical Baseball Abstract in 1985, he produced an immediate classic, hailed by the Chicago Tribune as the “holy book of baseball.” Now, baseball's beloved “Sultan of Stats” (The Boston Globe) is back with a fully revised and updated edition for the new millennium.

Like the original, The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract is really several books in one. The Game provides a century's worth of American baseball history, told one decade at a time, with energetic facts and figures about How, Where, and by Whom the game was played. In The Players, you'll find listings of the top 100 players at each position in the major leagues, along with James's signature stats-based ratings method called “Win Shares,” a way of quantifying individual performance and calculating the offensive and defensive contributions of catchers, pitchers, infielders, and outfielders. And there's more: the Reference section covers Win Shares for each season and each player, and even offers a Win Share team comparison. A must-have for baseball fans and historians alike, The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract is as essential, entertaining, and enlightening as the sport itself.

From Publishers Weekly
A premier baseball analyst and brand name, James (The Bill James Player Ratings Book, The Bill James Guide to Baseball Managers) releases a revised edition of his 1985 classic, with expanded player and team histories and reconsidered commentary. Divided into two sections, "The Game" and "The Players," this comprehensive and opinionated tome describes the evolution of the sport over the decades (uniforms in the 1890s, best minor league teams of the 1930s, the Negro Leagues, etc.) and the characteristics of its players (stats, injuries, habits and proclivities). The thumbnail player sketches in the second section (the 100 greatest players at each position) vary widely in content and tone: the entry on Lefty Gomez includes a page on his public-speaking abilities, while of Kevin Brown, James merely writes, "I don't root for him, either, but he is a great pitcher." (James has assigned the rankings according to a statistical rating formula he calls Win Shares, which he explains conceptually and mathematically.) The game section, though, is the standout. It may not contain detailed statistical leaders or standings for each year, or even who won each World Series, but it does offer information on new stadiums, the competitiveness of different leagues and shifts in the way the game was played. At the end of each chapter, a "decade in a box" lists major statistics and Jamesian awards, varying from the quantitative (the team with the best record) and the qualitative (the best switch hitter) to the quirky (the decade's ugliest player). (Dec.)Forecast: There are enough baseball and Bill James fans to ensure steady sales, and the pub date near enough to the World Series might encourage a few extra readers. A uniquely personal, even iconoclastic guide, this belongs in baseball libraries to counterpoint The Baseball Encyclopedia and Total Baseball.

From Library Journal
True to form, James's new Historical Baseball Abstract is filled with often fascinating and frequently quirky evaluations and insights regarding the history of baseball. Starting with the 1870s, James explores, decade by decade, how and where the game was played and who played it. He discusses nicknames, top minor-league teams, and the most admirable superstars, among other matters. At the close of the initial 13 chapters, the author highlights each ten-year period "in a box," with a player or two tagged as the best-looking, the ugliest, the fastest, the slowest, and so forth. The last half of the book presents James's evaluations of the top 100 or more players at each position. Some are expected, with Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx, for example, deemed the top first basemen. But Hank Greenberg is slotted in only at eighth place, and then James spends most of his time ragging on the great slugger's performance as the Cleveland Indians' general manager from 1949 to 1957. In other instances, the description of a player's on-field antics is melded with curious social commentary. All of this makes for a sometimes illuminating, occasionally exasperating book certain to engender controversy among baseball aficionados. For general libraries. R. C. Cottrell, California State Univ., Chico

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Since James' work began appearing in the early 1980s, he has changed the way discerning fans watch and discuss baseball. The game has always been a number-cruncher's delight, but James' Baseball Abstract and its progency have taken statistical analysis to a new level. One of his main contributions is context: Is a .300 batting average compiled in a season when the overall league average is .280 as praiseworthy as it is in a year when the league average is .250? In this revised edition of the Historical Abstract, he focuses, in two major sections, on "The Game" and "The Players." In the former, he examines trends, oddities, and myths decade by decade. James' appeal has never been limited to his numbers; he is also an engaging writer whose prose is enlivened with humor, the telling anecdote, and more than a touch of whimsy. (See his comments on the growth in the 1930s of nasty nicknames: Ernie "Schnozz" Lombardi, Henry "Stinky" Davis, "Dim" Dom Dallesandro. In the second section, he ranks the 100 all-time best players at each position, something others have done but few with the style or compelling logic that James brings to the task. Given the wealth of information and opinion this huge volume contains (statistics are updated through the 2000 season), it remains a bargain even at $45. It you add just one baseball book to your collection this year, make it this one. Wes Lukowsky

The Ultimate Baseball Book.
By kone
If you are a baseball fanatic, if you love statistics, if you love nostalgia, then you'll absolutely love this book. My son loves all things baseball, and this book gives him hours and hours of baseball lore and statistics to ponder over. This is definitely for the passionate baseball fan, not for the casual reader. If you love baseball, baseball history, and baseball statistics, this is the book for you.

But Only 4 for the Kindle Edition
By Bill Reich
I just got the Kindle version of this book. I already had it in harcover and I already had the first edition of the book. I want to comment on the Kindle-izing of the book first and then I have a few things to say about the book itself.
It is great to have this book on my Kindle. This is a great book to dip into when you want to take a break from your current reading. It is an important reference/resouce when analyzing or talking about baseball. But it is so physically big that it usually isn't there when you want to look at it. You just can't lug this monster around in case you need it.
On the other hand, some of that advantage is lost because the formatting into the Kindle version was far from perfect. The boxes where various matters are cordoned off from the main flow of the text are here just inserted and break up the text. I enjoyed every one of the boxes but I didn't stop reading the major articles to read them. I read them separately.
And this is only the second edition. There are stories and ideas absent from this edition that were vital. The distinction between peak and career value, and the brilliant essay showing how Mays and Mantle illustrated that distinction, were worth the price of admission. I can go back and read that in the first edition but it would be great to have it on my Kindle and people who don't have the first edition are going to miss it.
The Win Shares method he introduces, a way to evaluate ballplayers past and present, is ingenious and worth quite a lot. But I would hate to trade some of the stories and essays from the first edition for it.

Baseball Immortality
By Pugwash
After reading "Moneyball" by Michael Lewis, I believed I had struck major league nirvana. I didn't believe I would ever find a baseball book to equal it.

With every bit of respect to Mr Lewis, Bill James 1000 page abstract is every bit the superior read to "Moneyball". The breadth of Mr. James historical knowledge, and his salient social observations combine with his knack for storytelling to make this an eye-opening, funny, treasure trove of baseball knowledge.

He ranks the 100 best players at each position by virtue of a metric he has invented called a win-share. Furthermore, he has developed an algebraic formula whereby he can project players performances in the dead-ball eras into the live ball eras, and give comparable stats.

Some of the player mini bios are sad, some hilarious, and some incredibly thoughtful. He interjects his experience as a Kansas City Athletic fan, and later, a Royal fan.

The most interesting comparisons are in the pitching category, as there is so much completion from the top to bottom. The choices in the infield get thin down past number 50.

The statistical performances are but a backdrop to each players actual value. There are some legitimate surprises. Jimmy Wynn is rated #10 in left field, despite a .250 lifetime batting average.

Mercifully, this book was written in the late 1990"s, before the ugliness of the steroid scandal skewed the real player values and lifetime achievements. At this writing, the damage done to baseball is just being sorted out from this chemical imbalance.

I salute Mr. James for putting this in print, and if I met him tomorrow, would only be able to say "Wow!!".

The Queen Chronology, by Patrick Lemieux, Adam Unger

The Queen Chronology is a comprehensive account of the studio recording and release history of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor, who joined forces in 1971 as the classic line-up of the rock band Queen.

For nearly 40 years, Queen has both topped the charts and embedded itself in the musical landscape worldwide, with such hits as “We Will Rock You,” We Are The Champions,” “Another One Bites The Dust” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Their rock musical, We Will Rock You, and their Queen Extravaganza official tribute production both continue to carry on the band’s legacy to audiences long after the tragic passing of singer Freddie Mercury.

Years of extensive research have gone into the creation of the Chronology, which covers the very beginnings of band members’ careers, their earliest songwriting efforts and recording sessions, through the recording and releasing of Queen’s 15 original studio albums with their classic line-up, to the present-day solo careers of Brian May and Roger Taylor. All of this information is presented date by date in chronological order, with detailed descriptions of each song version, including those both released and known to be unreleased. Every Queen and solo album, single, non-album track, edit, remix and extended version is examined, as are known demos or outtakes, pre-Queen recordings and guest appearances. It’s all here in one place: The Queen Chronology!

The first edition of The Queen Chronology is exclusively digital, available on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ca, and other Amazon territories, for the Kindle e-book reader.

A fascinating read for any Queen fan
By Joe Silvey
Queen fans who've visited [...] already know the thorough knowledge base that co-author Adam Unger has put together over the years on Queen's studio work. I've read most all of his site and regularly return to it as a resource. And Patrick Lemieux has written for Queen's official site, supplying wonderful feature articles that are filled with facts and history, but peppered with personal testimony and perspective as a fan.

This new book takes all of that info and MORE and lays it out in a chronological timeline that's hard to stop reading once you've begun. They include start dates (as specific as possible when available) and end dates of album sessions, tours, appearances, and more - all as they relate to the musical work and output of Queen and its individual members. They've done their research to be sure - you'll frequently read an entry and find the original source (a certain interview / year for example) cited right there as you go. There's also valuable insight about rare tracks that are worth seeking out, and others that are not. The detail is astounding, and with just the right amount of subjectivity. Highly recommended!

The bible of all things Queen
By samcooke69
WOW! This breathtaking book is where you can begin and end anything you need to know about studio & live Queen. As a rabid collector I put this as high as you can get. As Queen fans we have been spoiled by the incredible Queen Live and Queen Complete Works books. I'm happy to say we can add a third gem. Again, hats off to the author and thank you very much for your love and research. 5 star book all day.

Incredibly thorough tome for every big Queen fan!
By BMLFW
If you're looking for a Queen book filled with lovely pictures, scant history and fluffy prose, this is not the book for you. If, on the other hand, you're looking for the most comprehensive Queen chronology published to date, this is absolutely IT! This book even corrects some mistakes in the official Queen chronology. So get out your reading glasses, play your Queen CDs at full tilt, and prepare for detail, detail, detail. (And by the way, the cover painting is a gorgeous representation of Queen live! I believe it's by one of the authors. My only complaint is I want a print of this work of art.)

This incredibly precise document of Queen is worth every penny, in my opinion!
