Impressive

I am impressed. Some ideas were repetitive and others were no-brainers.. but some were just breathtaking and really opened up my imagination to all the possibilities. As a scientist, I enjoy art and crafts, but its not my forte at designing... This will help me design and implement engaging art-based projects with a variety of skill sets/methods. For 20 dollars, I feel like I can approach homeschooling art in a far more meaningful way. So glad I bought it. These projects could be done from preschool through high school, just varying the size of the projects, expanse of materials, and skill difficulty depending on the age of the students. For example : the teacher could pre-cut some shapes for making the collages so kids only have to glue them together OR the teacher draws an outline on the page to give kids a guideline to work from.

Here is SOME of what you get in the book.... i stopped trying to list things at page 222 and even then i was just summarizing what was on each page. There is really so much here.

Great book of projects for the eight year old and up crowd. Most of the projects use household items and imagination. I plan to use some of the ideas for church groups and classrooms as well.

Megan Bearce, MA, LMFT is a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in providing support to super commuter couples. She holds a bachelor of science in accounting from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and a master of arts in clinical psychology from Antioch University Los Angeles. In addition to her private practice, she writes and speaks about topics such as perfectionism, parenting gifted girls, and women's issues in the workforce. She is currently developing a training program to educate therapists about working with super commuter clients. Megan lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with her super commuter husband and their two children.

Excellent Source Material

As a former super commuter flying between Minneapolis and Boston on a weekly basis, I read this book with great interest. Ms. Bearce does an excellent job in laying out the pros and cons of this ever more prevalent lifestyle, one that businessmen and women often find themselves in by necessity rather than by choice. If you are in a super commuting relationship, or are contemplating being in one, or are simply interested in what this lifestyle entails, I strongly urge you to read this book. You will not be disappointed.

Very helpful and informative read

Megan contacted my professional organization and told us about her new book "Super Commuter Couples: Staying Together When A Job Keeps You Apart. As a Marriage Family Counselor and spouse of a super commuter I was curious and interested in what she had to say about the topic. I was getting ready to hop on a plane to see my husband across the country and downloaded it on my Kindle and I'm very glad I did.

To begin with, it surprised me to hear was how very common this living arrangement is. While I have dealt with this issue in my own practice over the years, I think what Megan has so successfully done, is address it in a very direct way where she weaves the issues of super commuting into most aspects of relationships. Megan has taken the effort to interview many couples about their experiences with super commuting and she has also researched this contemporary topic from many angles. She is realistic about the challenges of super commuting relationships but also maintains a positive and hopeful outlook. She covers a vast range of situations, from military families to people working in the film business, to managing the challenges of parenting as well as the stresses that come with aging parents. She manages to include a variety of examples so that you get a sense of the common themes that people are challenged with such as all the hellos and goodbyes that come with the territory. There's a lot of information about parenting and she gives helpful tips and advice for keeping families connected while the commuting parent is away. Because my children are now grown, and super commuting is relatively new to my relationship, I was able to get a sense of where I am on the continuum of this lifestyle choice and found it to be validating and encouraging. I think that anyone who is experiencing either side of this arrangement will find this book helpful. She gives many examples of different types of super commuting relationships in the first part of the book and concludes the book with helpful suggestions and very practical tips, websites to visit, etc.

Excellent Book on the Super Commuter Relationship

As I am currently considering the possibility of a super commuter arrangement between Chicago and New York, this book has become instrumental in my decision process. Megan has written a book that does a good job of explaining what couples and families need to consider before entering into such an arrangement. The author has instant credibility since her husband also travels to New York on a weekly basis, and many examples are of course personal. She's realistic and measured in her approach, and to her credit she doesn't sugar-coat the issues. You'll read about several cases where couples were successful in maintaining this lifestyle, and some cases where they did not succeed. There were many family scenarios listed (married couples, unmarried couples, same sex couples, etc) so there are examples to which almost everyone can relate. Further, there is a great list of enlightening questions at the end of the book that you and your significant other can work on together to make sure it's the right thing for you. This book is as unique as the super commuter arrangement, and certainly I was very happy to find it since it helped my family better understand the important issues before I accept the job in New York.

FAMILY HISTORY AND JAZZ BEAUTIFULLY RENDERED

In this highly readable and deeply personal account, music, specifically jazz, is explored as the conduit by which immigrants from the Indian state of Goa created community in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, during the 1950s and 60s. The author's father worked for Barclays Bank by day and played the accordion by night. Jerry Luis and his fellow Jazz Swingers members regularly took the stage at the Ocean Breeze, the city's most popular restaurant and nightclub. There, in snazzy suits and bow ties, the musicians played "Take the A Train," "Bye, Bye Blackbird," and other favorites to the delight of their audiences which drew from a number of Tanzania's social clubs. East Africa was once home to hundreds of social, sporting and cultural associations including at least four Goan clubs in Dar es Salaam as well as Greek, Portuguese, Scottish and Italian associations -- many of whom gathered to dance to the melodies of the Jazz Swingers."Waiting for Sunrise" also explores the monumental changes that Tanzania, a British territory and racially segregated country, underwent in the years before and after 1961 when it gained its independence. These shifts are examined by the author through the lens of the Goan community and the Jazz Swingers. The book ends with a chapter on the author's own musical journey as a blues performer.Toward the end of the book, the author reflects that, "With every few exceptions, musicians in Dar functioned somewhat in a vacuum, generally playing with their own ethnic or racial groups. This was so different from my own musical experience in the U.S., which helped to reinforce the notion that while we may be different, we are all connected." Family history and jazz meld wonderfully in this highly recommended account.

You'd Make a Blunder by Not Buying It

Pink and yellow highlighter covers the pages, that's how much I am learning from this clever book. The chapter titles are intriguing, like Marshmallow Dialogue and Happy People in Happy Land, and the concise content of each chapter has me learning at a fast pace, which is just what I wanted. I have a lot to learn about writing fiction, but with James Scott Bell's awesome book, I know I'm better equipped to go after my goal of writing a successful novel.

I always get something new (or finally recognize something I should have understood long ago) whenever I read Bell's handbooks. This one is no exception. Lots of good points about craft, a few suggestions about life as a writer, and tips on getting started with Scrivener. Something for any writer.

About the Author
Patrick Luyten, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, University of Leuven; Reader in the Research Department of Clinical, Educational, and Health Psychology, University College London; and Visiting Professor at the Yale Child Study Center. His research focuses on the role of personality, stress, and interpersonal processes in depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia. He is also currently involved in studies on mentalization-based treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder. Dr. Luyten serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals and is a recipient of the Psychoanalytic Research Exceptional Contribution Award from the International Psychoanalytical Association. He also maintains a private practice.

Linda C. Mayes, MD, is the Arnold Gesell Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology in the Yale Child Study Center and Special Advisor to the Dean, Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Mayes’s research integrates perspectives from child development, behavioral neuroscience, psychophysiology and neurobiology, developmental psychopathology, and neurobehavioral teratology. Her work focuses on stress-response and regulatory mechanisms in young children at both biological and psychosocial risk. She has a half-time psychoanalytic practice, with clinical interests in early attachment relationships, personality disorders, and disturbances of adult attachment and social cognition. Sidney J. Blatt, PhD, until his death in 2014, was Professor Emeritus in the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology at Yale University. He was a Life Member of the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Blatt published extensively in a wide range of journals in psychology, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis, and authored several books. He was a recipient of the Mary S. A Very Eminent Life

What I like about Bill Bryson, besides his clear and witty writing style, is his curiosity and the fact that his questions are often the ones I would ask too. In this work he has turned his attention to The Bard, and his love for all things English shines through this too brief biography. We are treated to an overview of the history and culture of Shakespeare's world, along with insights into his contemporaries in writing. After reading Bryson's thorough explication of the authorship of the plays of Shakespeare, I will never again entertain the possibility that anyone but Will could have written them. We may not know much about the man, but what is available, Bryson has marshaled for a totally convincing argument in support of the genius of William Shakespeare. I may even revisit some of those plays I should have paid more attention to in school.

The whole idea is that we don't know much about Shakespeare... but Bryson turns that into quite a bit.

A tough assignment; write a book on a topic about which we know almost nothing, the life of William Shakespeare. Better yet, make the book about the fact that we know very little about the life of William Shakespeare. Let that book compete with thousands of others about Shakespeare. Doesn't sound like a recipe for a successful book, but Bryson has truly pulled it off.

Here's how.

First off, Bryson doesn't shy away from the fact that we know very little about Shakespeare, instead, he uses it to his advantage. After laying out the facts we do have about Shakespeare, Bryson turns to a description of the world in which Shakespeare lived to explain why we know so little about the man. He really brings 17th century England to life and paints a picture in which you can imagine Shakespeare operating. It's really well done and ends up being fascinating.

Second, Bryson addresses the speculation that has risen up around Shakespeare's life to fill the void of knowledge that we face. Using the information we do have about Shakespeare and the times in which he lived, he categorizes the various Shakespeare theories into more fanciful and less fanciful piles and explains why they belong there. It makes for really interesting reading.

My familiarity with and interest in Shakespeare are average to below average, and yet I found this book to be fascinating, readable and informative. It's made me more interested in Shakespeare.

Highly recommended even for those who aren't deeply interested in Shakespeare.

Yes! Shakespeare Really Did Write Shakespeare!

Bryson ends Chapter 1 with a simple statement: "The idea [of this book] is a simple one: to see how much of Shakespeare we can know, really know, from the record.
Which is one reason, of course, [that the book is] so slender."

It is amazing how Shakespeare can be a household name 400 years after he died, and yet we know few facts about him. If it hadn't been for his compatriots publishing "The First Folio" posthumously, he would have been long forgotten. Actually, as Bryson points out, he almost was forgotten anyway for the first 200 years after he died.

But thanks to the restoration of his reputation, and he had a good professional name while he was alive, people now comb his plays & poems and the public records for every meaning and every mention.

Bryson's explanation of how pronunciation has changed from Shakespeare's day is very interesting: "Much of the language Shakespeare used is lost to us now without external guidance. In and experiment in 2005, the Globe in London staged a production of 'Troilus and Cressida' in 'Early Modern English' or "Original Pronunciation'. The critic John Lahr, writing in the 'New Yorker', estimated that he could understand only about 30 percent of what was said." This is from someone who had watched a lot of Shakespeare.

I enjoyed the whole book, but the very best part is the last chapter, Chapter 9: Claimants. This covers the controversy over whether Shakespeare actually wrote Shakespeare, and in a commonsensical way debunks the claimants. I've always thought it was silly to say that Shakespeare couldn't have written "Macbeth" because he wasn't a lord or didn't go to college. He was the son of a mayor and could read and write. Why couldn't the spark of genius have shown itself?

If you want to read more, I highly recommend "The Book of William". This slim book not about the man but about the First Folio. I never would have thought there was that much to know about it. It's fascinating and humorous:

Continues to build on its potential

I really have no words that can convey how impressed I am with this fine series by Kazu Kibuishi.

"The Last Council" is like "The Empire Strikes Back" of the Amulet series in which Emily has to face the darker side of the hero's journey. New characters are introduced as older characters come back into the story.

What is impressive about "The Last Council" is that three different stories are presented in one volume and it shows the growth of Kazu and his team that these stories are balanced so well and work together so that when you arrive to the end, it feels organic.

A continued enjoyment of the series is Emily's mother who has a really great line while they are in Cielis which is both true in general but wrong in context to the situation. When you read the story, you'll know exactly what that means. But that line shows just how finely tuned this story has become.

The art, especially, is beautiful. And while the characters are round and "cartoon-y", the story itself does not shirk from showing just how risky the adventure has become.

I look forward to new volumes of this fantastic series.

This series keeps getting better

After having finished the first three novels, I anxiously awaited this next release. Each of the first three books pulled me in with great characters, colorful scenes, and suspenseful storylines. The fourth novel was no different, and well worth the wait.

Story overview:
Having finally arrived at the mysterious floating island known as Cielis, Emily becomes anything but relaxed. At first, the expected assembly with the Guardian Council was delayed, and then she's told that she must first pass a test.

Meanwhile, Miskit and Cogsley are rescued by a mysterious man who has ties to their old master. And back on Cielis, Leon and Enzo investigate the reason for the oddly empty streets.

Things go afoot when Emily learns that she must not only pass a test, but compete with other Stonekeepers. What should have been an open invitation turns into a big ordeal. As she works through the trials, that uneasy feeling from before only intensifies.

My thoughts:
Now I can't wait for the fifth volume to come out. One of the best graphic novel series out there. Be sure to check them out if you haven't already.

Things to consider:
No sexual situations, harsh language, gore, or extreme cases of violence. There are a few scenes that could be considered scary to younger children, but otherwise the tale is harmless. Good for preteens and older. Equally good for boys and girls.

Loved it - Another great book in the series

I loved this book. As with previous Amulet books, the illustrations are wonderful and the story line continues to develop nicely. There are 3 things going on during this book that are brought together towards the end of the book. I continue to like how characters and the story is evolving. I wrote in a past review that time will tell, but so far I consider this to Bone-like in its breadth, depth, and overall quality. It also seems like the story will take at least 10 books to tell at its current pace. I think the author has suggested this much. My only 'disappointment' is that I waited 1 year for this book (pre-ordered in March) and finished it within an hour. That said, I know it takes a lot of effort to produce these books-- I follow the author's twitter and blog. I guess this is just a new experience for me. In the case of Bone, for example, I found out about them a few years ago so I was able to buy all of the books and read them back to back.
