One of the most useful image-editing books in my library

Don't let the title throw you. At the time the book was published (early 2007), Photoshop CS2 was the current version of Photoshop, but the techniques and ideas presented in the book are just as valid for the subsequent versions of Photoshop.

Author Bruce Fraser introduces the subject of image sharpening with some theory and general considerations of sharpening, then moves into specific sharpening tools and techniques, focusing on building a sharpening workflow. He covers how to analyze an image to determine the best approach to sharpening, both for the overall image as well as localized sharpening. The last 100+ pages of the book cover actual examples of image sharpening with detailed step-by-step actions.

Over the years, I have accumulated a library of image-editing books, and this is one of the books that I use the most. Bruce Fraser writes clearly and succinctly in a style that is helpful for just about anyone from novice through advanced professional. "Image Sharpening with Adobe Photoshop CS2" is one of those must-have books for anyone using Photoshop.

Most Effective Sharpening Technique I've ever used!

I bought this book about 6 months ago and it has become a "bible" of sharpening for me. I shot with 6mp and 8mp (now 10mp) dSLRS and had previously used a single pass of UnSharp Mask or Smart Sharpen for sharpening. (all digital photos need sharpening -- *all* of them -- and in-camera sharpening is not desirable for many reasons)

My photos never came out as sharp as others I had seen published and I kept asking myself, "what am I doing wrong?! Is it my equipment, my photo technique, ...?". Now I know that at least part of it was my *sharpening* technique. Also, I needed to learn that photos properly sharpened for output (printing) will likely *not* look good on the screen (esp at 100%), and how to better judge output sharpness when viewing on the screen. Hints: (1) don't get freaked by apparent sharpening ugliness when viewing at 100% or greater; (2) only view at even zoom factors like 25% and 50%; and (3) 50% is often a fair zoom to use when judging sharpening for output.

The results I've seen from the sharpening techniques in this book range from "great" to "oh-my-god-this-is-*fabulous*". I'm finally producing photos that are as sharp as I had always hoped for, comparable to anything I've seen published.

Bruce Fraser starts at the beginning, explaining the need for sharpening, and proceeds to build a case for why a three-level sharpening process is so effective (Source Sharpening, Content/Creative Sharpening, and Output Sharpening). After you're convinced by his sound reasoning that this is a good idea, he details *how* to implement this 3-pass sharpening process. I codified the three passes into Photoshop Actions, which now take no more time for me to run than the single-pass sharpening I had previously done.

I keep this book in my car or on my shelf, with dozens of post-it tags sticking out where I added my own indexing to all the good parts. I'm sure that this book will become ragged with use, over the years. It is without a doubt the most useful photography book I've bought in the last 10 years.

Wow, a real book for professionals... FINALLY

As a photographer and owner of a photo-restoration business, this was a very important topic for me. I regularly get out of focus images to restore and often the basic sharpening methods in Photoshop simply aren't sufficient.

There is a lot of theory in the beginning of the book, which is good; helpful especially if you don't have a solid understanding of digital sharpening, but then comes the real meat. Fraser goes into many different ways to achieve the effects you need with detailed instruction. It's sometimes hard to see the changes in his photo illustrations, but trust him and try what he says. My copy is FULL of post-it tabs. Superb book for the professional.

For high-level execs

I think this is a nice book for the high-level exec who needs names, terminology, and problem-situating for Big Data Analytics. Its premise - which I think is a good one - is that the reader is going to be embedded in the already existing B2B and B2C data structures, architecture, and infrastructure already entrenched in the business/consumer world. I don't think there's much here for a data scientist, except in the sense it gives you the vernacular executives use to speak of, and frame, their discipline. But for the exec who needs to know why Big Data poses challenges and opportunities, this is a very digestible approach. It's an "airplane book" for the busy executive.

Too short for in depth analysis

In case you missed the small print below, this book is a mere 73 pages. It makes for a good short introduction to the topic. But if you are at the stage where you are considering buying a book on Big Data, you will probably want to invest in something more substantial.

The book - or the leaflet, since there are very few pages - has some very interesting information dispersed at various point but at some point, reading an IBM advertising does not fit with expectations ...

Very good.

As far as introductory economics texts go, Sloman is about as difficult as it gets. Nonetheless, it is very readable, and explains (relatively) difficult concepts in a straight-forward, lucid style. Also, it is an ideal text for those students planning to study economics further because within each chapter it has a 'basic' treatment of the issues at hand, and then follows it with an optional 'intermediate' treatment that builds upon the former one. This is an excellent idea in that it gives students the option of advancing far more quickly and easily than by using a 'standard' textbook approach. Further, the content is 'more intelligent' than in your average text - e.g., its chapter on general equilibrium contains material on Pareto Optimality (often left out of texts), and it has an entire chapter devoted alternative theories of the firm (always left out of texts).
In short, this text will challenge first year university students, but will also reward them with greater insight than will the average introductory textbook.

Excellent Economics Text

I concur with the assessment of Mr. Mariyani-Squire. This is an excellent text. Although quite challenging in places for an introductory text, the author organizes material in such a way that students can cover the basics and then extend/apply them. For students who want to go beyond the basics, the book provides additional material and illustrations. Particularly helpful are: the many sections throughout the book where concepts are listed in summary form; and the definitions of key terms printed at the bottom of each page. I use this in an International Baccalaureate (Higher Level) economics class with IB Diploma high school seniors in their second year of economics study. Since the book is written primarily for students in the U.K., it allows U.S. students to apply concepts using examples beyond their own country.

Putting things in order

I have come to the age where all around me I see illness and death. I do not have a dedicated place where all my information (will, insurance, etc.)can be found. If something was to happen to me my husband and children would be lost. I guess I'm just wanting to make things easier for everyone.

This book is very helpful. It even covers what kind of burial you would like, what you would like to be said and what music should be played.
It's title really covers the gamut of everything I need to do. Now I just have to get organized enough to do it.

We're closing in on the 150th anniversary of Darwin's Origin of Species, but clearly not closing in on any resolution of the debates that the book stirred up between science and religion. In this slim volume, physicist and theologian Ian Barbour summarizes his own decades-long accumulation of knowledge in these two arenas. Writing with clarity and a scientist's eye for organization, Barbour takes on the scientific and theological significance of the big questions: the big bang, quantum physics, Darwin and Genesis, human nature (the question of determinism), and the relationship between a free God and a law-bound universe. In each chapter, Barbour recognizes four possible ways of responding to the dilemmas posed by these topics: conflict, represented by Biblical literalists and atheists, both of whom agree that a person cannot believe in both God and evolution; independence, which asserts that "science and religion are strangers who can coexist as long as they keep a safe distance from each other"; dialogue, which invites a conversation between the two fields; and integration, which moves beyond dialogue to explore ways in which the two fields can inform each other. Barbour notes that his own sympathies lie with dialogue and integration.

Barbour won the 1999 Templeton Prize for his role in advancing the study of science and religion. "No contemporary has made a more original, deep, and lasting contribution toward the needed integration of scientific and religious knowledge and values," John Cobb has written of Barbour. This concise introduction to science-and-religion issues provides impressively well-balanced coverage of an increasingly complex family of topics in a single, accessible volume. As one of the better-known authors in the field, even prior to winning the 1999 Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, Barbour has shown an almost unique ability to coax a "field" out of an unruly bunch of theologians, philosophers and scientists whose arguments often resist summary and synthesis. But this is exactly Barbour's goal as he guides readers through a four-fold typology of the science/religion relationshipDConflict, Independence, Dialogue and IntegrationDthat will be familiar to readers of his Religion in an Age of Science. Barbour's own sympathies are markedly on the side of dialogue and integration, but he makes an unusually successful effort to represent other perspectives in a fair light. When Science Meets Religion is the winner of the Templeton Prize for advancing religious understanding. As a humanist, this topic is always of interest to me, and I found Barbour's view on process theology most interesting. The typology of the book was such that four "topics" were discussed in each chapter with respect to the "view" being discussed: Conflict, Independence, Dialogue, and Integration. So, for instance Astronomy and Creation are "analyzed" from those four points, as are the other major sticking points between science and religion.
Barbour seems to treat each position with respect and objectivity and clearly states his own position so that the reader is not required to "guess" where he is coming from in his own thinking. For example, in chapter five (Genet6ics, Neuroscience, and Human Nature) Barbour states clearly the "I will defend an integral view of the person as a psychosomatic unity, which I believe is closer to both the biblical view and the evidence from contemporary science." And so it goes through all the major topics of the book. And, in the next to the last paragraph, we have this conclusion: "Finally, I find the concepts of process philosophy particularly helpful, but I am aware that a single coherent set of philosophical categories may not do justice to the rich diversity of human experience."
In the end, Barbour has not convinced me to leave off my Humanist views, but he has indeed given me the framework I need to understand the need for others to use a religious model to express their sense of unity with all the Cosmos. As he so eloquently explains, all models are limited and partial, and none gives a complete or adequate picture of reality. So it is just a matter of where you wish to put your faith when it comes to understanding your own place in that infinity. One can put faith in science eventually giving us answers to the major questions we have or one can put faith in religion explaining the mysteries. Whichever system one chooses, one must keep in mind that no one model fulfills all needs or answers all questions.

"Quantum Physics: A Challenge to Our Assumptions about Reality?
Classical physics was deterministic and reductionistic in assuming that the behavior of all objects could be exactly predicted from accurate knowledge of their smallest components. Quantum physics, by contrast, acknowledges an inherent uncertainty in the prediction of events at the atomic and subatomic levels. It is also holistic in showing that the behavior of larger wholes is not simply the sum of the behavior of their parts, but involves distinctive system laws. More over, the quantum world can never be known as it is in itself, but only as it interacts with the observer in a particular experimental system. Quantum physics thus suggests the openness of the future, the inter connectedness of events, and the limitations of human knowledge. Some theistic interpreters propose that God determines the indeterminacies left open by the laws of quantum physics. Advocates of Eastern mysticism say that quantum holism supports their belief in the fundamental unity of all things. The new physics has led scientists, philosophers, and theologians to exciting discussions about time, causality, and the nature of reality."

Concise, engaging, and informative.

It's not easy to write a clear and compelling book relating science and religion; after all, it requires versatility in two separate fields, each of which tries to grapple with enormous questions. Barbour is able to give the reader just enough background to follow his arguments in such diverse areas as cosmology, neuroscience, and quantum physics. The book is incredibly well organized and commendably brief. The fourfold classification scheme for relating religion and science (conflict, independence, complementarity, integration) is catchy and effective. The one limitation is that (for reasons the author explains) this book does not explore Eastern religions. At no point did I find myself involved in the heavy slog required to work through other books that address similar topics. A wonderfully accessible work by a world class scholar.

Manuscript is revised to reflect Canadian best practices, standards of health promotion and screening guidelines (e.g., breast health, newborn and infant screenings), as well as Canadian standards of communication and documentation. In addition to the new Canadian Nursing Research provided for each chapter, there are focused health promotion topics, and new critical thinking questions that reflect Canadian national licensing exams and address all question levels (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation). Each chapter also includes a threaded case study that requires critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to analyze data, document, plan care, and communicate findings. Additional features, ancillary material, and media related to the book build on the in-text cases to reinforce correct elements of subjective and objective data collection and variations necessary for different problems, age groups, and cultures.
