From the Publisher
Karma, death, and reincarnation are fascinating subjects for many of us. The more we understand them, the richer and more meaningful life becomes for us. In this book you'll read the words of Paramhansa Yogananda, a great master of yoga who wrote not from speculation, but from his inner perception of truth.

Yogananda offered teachings that can fill your life with inspiration and clarify your spiritual direction.

Paramhansa Yogananda came to the United States from India in 1920, bringing to the West the teachings and techniques of yoga, the ancient science of soul awakening. He was the first master of yoga to make his home in the West, and his Autobiography of a Yogi has become the bestselling autobiography of all time, awakening fascination in Westerners with the spiritual teachings of the East.

Yoga is the ancient science of redirecting one's energies inward to produce spiritual awakening. In addition to bringing Americans the most practical and effective techniques of meditation, Yogananda showed how these principles can be applied to all areas of life. He was a prolific writer, lecturer, and composer. He lived in America 32 years, until his death in 1952.

The articles included in this book are taken from several sources: the lessons he wrote in the 1920s and 1930s; articles of his that appeared in Inner Culture and East West magazines, published before 1943; the 1946 edition of Autobiography of a Yogi; Yogananda's original interpretation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, edited by Swami Kriyananda; and notes taken by Swami Kriyananda during the years he lived with Yogananda as a close disciple.

Our goal in this book is to let the Master's spirit come clearly through, with a minimum of editing. Sometimes sentences, redundant in the present context, have been deleted. Sometimes words or punctuation have been changed to clarify the meaning. Most of what is included here is not available elsewhere.

May Yogananda's words on this important subject bring you understanding, comfort, and inspiration.

From the Inside Flap
As you explore the subjects of karma, death, and reincarnation in the pages of this book, you discover that each subject has much to teach you about how to approach every day of your life. Beyond that, as you delve into these pages, you will find a greater sense of direction and inner joy filling your life.

Paramhansa Yogananda (1893-1952), one of the most renowned and beloved yoga masters of the 20th century, is the author of the spiritual classis, Autobiography of a Yogi. One of the first teachers to bring yoga to the West, Yogananda emphasized direct inner experience of the Divine, which he called "Self-realization." His teachings are universal and offer a practical approach to inner awakening.

In his early years in America (1920-1942) Yogananda wrote several series of lessons and many articles that are no longer widely available. The writings in the Wisdom of Yogananda series are drawn from these sources.

Can't recommend enough!
By Steve
Discovered Paramahansa Yogananda teachings in 1996. Lost my way for 15 years. Finally back on track after going through some difficult times. Following his teachings and practicing Kriya Yoga once again. Can't recommend his teachings enough for helping to cultivate happiness and well-being.

Interesting, but that doesn't mean I agree
By Disembodied Avatar
Kind of hard for me to swallow that if you're born poor, you must have been a bad person in a previous life. What if you're born to poor but incredibly loving parents? Would that really be a punishment! By dad was born into poverty but worked hard and rose up through life, and it's pretty hard for me to think that his soul was anything but wonderful through every life he may have lived. Nonetheless, this was a quick and interesting read.

A short but beautifully-written explanation of Karma and Reincarnation
By JohnnyC
As someone who has struggled a bit with the concepts of karma and reincarnation, I found this little book to be the absolute BEST in terms of quickly but precisely covering both topics. Very enlightening. I was really impressed. And since I also have kind of a short attention span, I appreciated the fact that I could read the whole thing in about 2 hours. Well worth the time and money.

A book almost as remarkable as some of the people whose stories' it tells
By Shalom Freedman
In this book C.P. Snow writes portraits, or 'intellectual biographies' of Rutherford, the mathematician G. H. Hardy, H.G. Wells, Einstein, Lloyd George, Winston Churchill, Robert Frost,Dag Hammarskjold, Stalin. The essays are given a special perspective by the fact that Snow knew personally many of his subjects.

The most fascinating are those on Rutherford, Hardy, and Einstein. The essays are informed by Snow's great intelligence and considerable descriptive powers. Above all they are made such compelling reading because of Snow's knowledge of human character.

In this essay on one of the great master- physicists of all time Rutherford who worked during the Golden Age of Physics Snow writes of scientists and scientific work in a general.

" Nevertheless it is true that , of all the kinds of people I have lived among, the scientists were much the happiest.Somehow scientists were buoyant at a time when other intellectuals could not keep away from despair. The reasons for this are not simple. Partly, the nature of scientific activity , its complete success on its own terms,is itself a source of happiness; partly, people , who are drawn to scientific activity tend to be happier intemperament, the scientists did not think constantly of the human predicament.Since they could not alter it, they let it alone. When they thought about people, they thought most of what could be altered not what couldn't. So they gave their minds to the individual condition not to the social one."

This description would seem to apply the essay on the most venerated of all Scientists of the age, Einstein. Snow describes a day long conversation with Einstein and gives a general overall impression of the man that has insights I have not seen elsewhere. Snow speaks of the surprising physical strength of Einstein, but more importantly of Einstein's political wisdom and courage. Snow sees him as having done yeoman work for Mankind after becoming a legend in his own lifetime.. He shows how Einstein while deploring all physical violence, nonetheless had the sense to support the Allied War effort. He shows how Einstein despite his deploring all nationalism supported the Zionist effort because of his sympathy for poor, outcast, suffering Jews of Europe. He shows how the solitary and lonely Einstein nonetheless truly felt and lived by the thought ' that if we do not live for others we do not live.'

He shows too the undaunting courage and persistence of Einstein as scientist. In this he finds a comparison between the 'unbudgeable' character of Einstein and that of Churchill. Both persisted in their goals for Einstein the exploration of the Nature of Physical Reality, and pushed all aside to do this. Snow of course tells the story of the wonder year of 1905 and Einstein's three - revolutionary papers. He also tells once again the story of Einstein's weathering the great crisis of the divorce and separation from his two sons, and persisting in the thinking that resulted in the General Theory of Relativity. (1915)

In another of the better essays on the mathematician G. H. Hardy Snow tells of how Hardy's obsession with cricket constituted a good part of their conversations. He tells of Hardy's great collaborations with Littlewood. And he tells the remarkable story of Ramanujan the self- taught Indian mathematician who as a storekeeper sent pages of his work to Hardy who understood that he was dealing with a native mathematical genius on order of Gauss or Euler. Ramanujan came to England and worked at Cambridge but unfortunately died young.

This is the way Snow describes their last meeting.

" Hardy used to visit him, as he lay dying in a hospital at Putney. It was on one of those visits that there happened the incident of the taxi- cab number. Hardy had gone out to Putney by taxi, as usual his chosen method of conveyance. He went into the room where Ramanujan was lying. Hardy, always inept about introducing a conversation, said, probably without a greeting , and certainly as his first remark. 'The number of my taxi- cab was 1729. It seemed to me rather a dull number'. To which

Ramanujan replied: 'No.Hardy! It is a very interesting number. It is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways.'

A book almost as remarkable as some of the people whose stories it tells.

Personal impressions on these great lives from one who knew them
By Nova137
Review of "Variety of Men" by C.P. Snow. Copyright 1966, 1967 C.P. Snow

"The chapters on Lloyd George and G. H. Hardy appeared first in *The Atlantic Monthly,* the chapter on Einstein in *Commentary,* and the chapter on Stalin in *Esquire*."

This quote let's us know this is a collection of original essays. Yet, they aren't essays, they are the author's "personal impressions" left-over from actual encounters (job interviews, private conversations, committee meetings) of the author with the subject. The subjects of interest are:

Rutherford 3
G.H. Hardy 21
H.G. Wells 63
Einstein 87
Lloyd George 123
Winston Churchill 149
Robert Frost 173
Dag Hammarskjold 201
Stalin 225

The author's Preface is just delightful. So personable. It is the author's own inner dialogue come to life. He explains that he believes he is being honest in these personal impressions. And, he wants his words to be taken, "no more than that". He "met them all except for Stalin," but also studied them and the "standard works about them (and, in some cases, the works less well known) as carefully as I can." He wants us to know that when he "reports remarks in direct speech, I believe that my memory is accurate, and that they were said in those words, or in words closely similar."

The honesty he vouchsafes comes with a warning. "These remarks which stuck in my memory, and which I can vouch for, were usually said in the course of prolonged conversations. The rest has gone, or left only a general impression of its sense. By abstracting the words which most impressed or amused me, I may sometimes without intending to have introduced an emphasis of my own. I don't think I have, but I ought to give the warning."

One of the things that stands out in this work is how the author compares and contrasts the geniuses he writes about. Here are some samples that show how he is able to tell us about Hardy directly or by contrasting him with Einstein and Rutherford:

"His mind, as I have just mentioned, was brilliant and concentrated: so much so that by his side anyone else's seemed a little muddy, a little pedestrian and confused. He wasn't a great genius, as Einstein and Rutherford were."

"There is something else, though, at which he was clearly superior to Einstein or Rutherford or any other great genius: and that is at turning any work of the intellect, major or minor or sheer play, into a work of art."

"Much of his childhood, unlike Einstein's, was typical of a future mathematician's. He was demonstrating a formidably high I.Q. as soon as, or before, he learned to talk."

"Nevertheless, he had to live with an over-delicate nature. He seems to have been born with three skins too few. Unlike Einstein, who had to subjugate his powerful ego in the study of the external world before he could attain his moral stature, Hardy had to strengthen an ego which wasn't much protected. This at times in later life made him self-assertive (as Einstein never was) when he had to take a moral stand. On the other hand, it gave him his introspective insight and beautiful candor, so that he could speak of himself with absolute simplicity (as Einstein never could)."

Or, here, on pages 27 and 28 comparing him again to Einstein and then to the educational well-fare that a country takes for its geniuses:

"He was a classical anti-narcissist. He could not endure having his photograph taken: so far as I know, there are not half-a-dozen photographs in existence. He would not have any looking-glass in his rooms, not even a shaving mirror...this would have been odd enough, if his face had been like a gargoyle: superficially it might seem odder, since all his life he was good-looking quite out of the ordinary. But, of course, narcissism and anti-narcissism have nothing to do with looks as outside observers see them.

"This behavior seems eccentric, and indeed it was. Between him and Einstein, though, there was a difference in kind. Those who spent much time with Einstein--such as Infeld--found him grow stranger, less like themselves, the longer they knew him. I am certain that I should have felt the same. With Hardy the opposite was true. His behavior was often different, bizarrely so, from ours: but it came to seem a kind of superstructure set upon a nature which wasn't all that different from our own, except that it was more delicate, less padded, finer-nerved."

"His family had no money, only a schoolmaster's income, but they were in touch with the best education advice of late nineteenth century England. That particular kind of information has always been more significant in this country than any amount of wealth. The scholarships have been there all right, if one knew how to win them. There was never the slightest chance of the young Hardy being lost--as there was of the young Wells or the young Einstein. From the age of twelve, he had only to survive, and his talents would be looked after."

I hope this taste of Mr. Snow's insights into these remarkable men has sparked enough of an interest in you to make a purchase today.

Zwang! The source of Einstein's Creativity
By Herbert L Calhoun
In this series of discussions of remarkable men, I have singled them out each one for separate reviews, simply because to lump them together would do Snow's incredible writing an injustice.

Of all the books I have read about the Olympian genius, Albert Einstein, this, the shortest one, in my estimation is by far also one of the best. The author, was a distinguished British Novelist and physicist who knew Einstein (as well as the other Scientists in this series) as a friend and studied him both as a Scientist, and a human being and also as a friend. The beauty of this portrait and this series, is not only that it is written in British English instead of American English (meaning that it is written so economically precise that you can almost hear a British accent flowing from the page, and that it is free of clutter and unnecessary sentimentality).

But more than this, it is written with such sensitivity and respect for all its subjects that the poignancy alone touches the reader at a very deep level. In addition to being beautifully written, it also answers a host of hitherto unanswered questions about these subjects, including Albert Einstein the man: His feelings about art and literature and creativity in general, for instance. I was neither surprised nor unhappy to discover that his favorite book was "Brothers Karamazov," by my favorite writer, the Existentialist Russian Novelist Fedor Dostoevski.

However, Snow's deepest insight into Einstein's attitude towards creativity comes from a word he had heard that Einstein used since early childhood and throughout his life. The word was "Zwang," which when translated from German, mean roughly "no [societal] constrains." One can easily conclude from this recitation that it was the space that Zwang created that allowed Einstein's creativity to soar so high for so long. Zwang may also go a long way in explaining why the great Scientist also had so much trouble with authority figures throughout his life.

Another matter this article clears up is the role Einstein's theory actually played in the development of the atomic bomb. According to Snow, it played no role at all because suspicions about the ability to harness nuclear fission for purposes of making a weapon were well known and well conceptualized even before Einstein's theoretical formulation of E=MC^2. Thus after the fission experiments by Lisa Mietner and Otto Hahn, it would have been empirically apparent that a bomb could be made even without Einstein's famous equation.

A similar confusion is cleared up in this series about the warning letter sent to Roosevelt that was signed by Einstein about the possibility of building a fission bomb. Einstein was more a convenient conduit than an instigator of the letter. Although he certainly was as concerned as the others that Hitler might get the bomb first, the initiative for that letter lay in the hands of Szliard, Wigner, Teller, and Fermi.

For a quick, elegant read about everybody's favorite set of scientists, one cannot do better than this. Five Stars

What's Done In the Dark - Reviewed by Tumika Patrice Cain, Say What?? Book Club, Author
By Tumika Patrice Cain, Say What?? Book Club
Youngblood’s story continues as he is discharged from the hospital in bad shape from a random beat down. But this is the least of his worries as he comes home to find the unthinkable has happened. Angry, bitter and set on revenge, he is determined to find out who is at the heart of these horrible things happening in his life.
His negative attitude towards women never changes, but that doesn’t stop the women from continuing to flock his way. Inez continues to hold him down in whatever way he wants, despite the danger she could be putting herself in. Having him seemed to be all she needs and wants. But he wants more than just her complete loyalty and continues to deal with other women, even as he lives with her.

His patient nature was an asset, as over time he was able to avenge those who had violated him. But payback is a bear on his back riding him right into hiding, as his actions have finally caught up with him. The walls seem to close in all around him, and though he sees the consequences of his actions and how they have affected others, it’s too late to turn the hand. The script has been written and he must pay the piper. What’s done in the dark always comes to the light and there is always a price to pay for the mistakes of the past.

Layer upon layer of lessons were presented in this book. Cash has managed to tell the story in the most real and uncut way as only he can. While the choices of Youngblood’s life cost far more than he ever bargained for, you have to respect a person who deals with the consequences like an adult, accepting full responsibility for his actions. Sometimes the lessons we need to learn are the ones that cost us the most. As with other stories I’ve read by him, Cash has the ability to tug on my emotions. It’s so easy to feel for his characters and want a different hand for them, but the reality remains is that everyone loses in living the street life.

I enjoyed it
By Connie
This novel was a very good read, it captures street life along with the mayhem...the rise and falls of the old and the up and coming in the drug world, a page flipper, and drama filled. I totally agree with the title of this novel..being in this type of arena how can one trust without always looking over their shoulder. Inez is a ride or die chic, and Juanita just wanted 2 make life better, but the streets had captured Youngblood and soon things begin to fall apart... once again betrayl shows it's ugly face, lives lost and or stolen, kids are born, and family no more. All for the love of the streets...the fame..the power, and the women that comes along with the game. True to the saying "Loose Lips Sink Ships"....in this novel it comes to be, but when your put in a corner for love or honor do you fall or do you snitch..what sacrifices do you make and loyality to whom?. This was a good read, if you have yet 2 read part1 read it, but then you'll have 2 read this one, it's good, trust.

Written by an immunologist, Vaccine Illusion explains why vaccines cannot give us lasting immunity to infectious diseases and how they jeopardize our natural immunity and overall health.

About time!
By JT
I would like to personally thank this author for stepping up to the plate and giving us all a real look at the inner workings of vaccination and the complications that arise from its overuse in today's world.
Being a paramedic for over ten years, I saw first hand many of the vaccine related injuries spoken of in this book (and some that were not), & I am sick of second & third year medical students in an ER telling families that "your child must have had some kind of response to a virus", when there is an absence of any other explanation for the child's condition on presentation at the ER except for it being post vaccination.
Doctors continue to see themselves as a high authority, yet to continue be taught only what pharmaceutical companies want them taught. For the sake of our kids and future generations, I hope this stops one day soon. Credible books like this one will help that cause.
So, thank you to the author, please continue to spread the word & I will continue to promote your great work!

Excellent!!! Very clear and concise
By Alirio J. Zavarce
Once I started reading this book, I couldn't stop. Excellent explanations in layman terms of the state of affairs of the vaccination tyranny implemented in the US. After you read this book, you will understand why vaccinations are a failure.

NOW . . . The HONEST Truth about VACCINES!
By Jesse Carnes
Dr. Tetyana Obukhanych is an immunologist. Despite her PhD credentials from Rockefeller Univ in NYC, and post-doctoral credentials from Harvard and Stanford, she speaks very clearly, even lucidly to the everyday reader. Admittedly, she states that immunology is an ". . . ivory tower" discipline, but she moves beyond that candid and honest statement, by showing HOW the 21st century populace became "married" to the concept of Vaccines, and then shows the fallacy in the concept, itself, and the inability of the concept to produce on its own promises. This is because of Primary and Secondary Vaccine failure, and the inherent ingredients which pose a Genuine Threat to the Life and Health of vaccine recipients of the 21st century.

Additiionally, in this 50+pp brief tome, Dr Tetyana shows the failure of Vaccine Immunity v. Natural Immunity, and the inherent dangers which come with the CURRENT Vaccine Schedule: the Mercury [as a preservative] in many vaccines [especially Flu vaccines]. One thing the reader notices about Dr. Tetyana is that like Dr. Andy Wakefield (UK), Dr. Russell Blaylock (Ret. Pediatric Neuro-Surgeon), Dr. Suzanne Humphries, and Dr. Kelly Brogan (NYC physician), is that THESE academicians are ASKING Questions. Dr. Tetyana wants Truth to prevail, especially when an adult or child's life and health are at stake.

Dr. Tetyana advocates FULLY-INFORMED CONSENT on the part of parents, especially and by patients in general. Much of the mainstream Medical Community and Mainline-Media BALK at much of what Dr. Tetyana advocates in this book, but of course they have good reason: PROFITS. Like few physicians and PhDs, Dr. Tetyana is honest and money is never FIRST, as it tends to be the case among the majority within the Gargantuan Pharmaceutical field. The pharmaceutical field is a morass where Clarity of Information has become increasingly obfuscated and even esoteric.

Point: This book is not for those who want to feel GOOD about the current state of medical-affairs within the USA-Medical Community. This book is for those COURAGEOUS Readers who want the Truth ... the unvarnished, honest and Naked Truth. Sad to say, most people do not want to be Confused by the FACTS. Accordingly, this book is NOT for them.

I LIKE this book because there are still SOME good physicians and academicians who want TRUTH at all costs, and CARE about their patients more than ACCOLADES and PROFITS. This book will appeal for those who want CANDOUR and Helpful, but sometimes disturbing Data about the Medical World in the West, as it currently stands. Dr. Tetyana is on the patient's side, on the Parents' side, and especially on the children's side. This book exudes Honesty, which is refreshing, and real honesty gets Specific, which was her motive all along.

“A charming read.”—Christian Century (Christian Century)

“This brisk primer is, for the neophyte, a good place to start immersing oneself in the history of Western thought.”—Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly)

“This book is a little classic, invaluable for the man or woman in the street who would like to know more about philosophy. . . . [It] suggests that philosophy is ‘not harsh and crabbed, as dull fools suppose’, but a thoroughly enjoyable way to stretch your mind.”—Merryn Williams, Oxford Times (Merryn Williams Oxford Times 2011-10-06)

'A primer in human existence: philosophy has rarely seemed so lucid, so important, so worth doing and so easy to enter into. It's refreshing to see the subject presented in terms of the history of ideas rather than of timeless concepts.A wonderful introduction for anyone who's ever felt curious about almost anything.' - Sarah Bakewell, author of How To Live: A Life of Montaigne in One Question and Twenty Attempts at an Answer (Sarah Bakewell)

‘A lively and eye-catching book, written in an easy style which should have splendid appeal for a young audience.’ - Peter Cave, author of Can a Robot be Human?: 33 Perplexing Philosophy Puzzles (Peter Cave)

“…a tour of the major ideas and thinkers in the history of philosophy, nicely presented in 40 brief chapters.”—The Bookseller (The Bookseller 2011-06-10)

“Warburton packs a heck of a lot in to what is something of a Goldilocks volume: neither too much nor too little, the exegesis neither too thing or too thick and lumpy, his Little History can be consumed as a nourishing treat in its own right or provide the perfect fuel to kick-start anyone’s journey into philosophy.’’—Julian Baggini, The Observer (Julian Baggini The Observer 2011-09-04)

“The book has a certain quality that comes from accepting a challenge under severe conditions, then taking it on without making a big deal of the whole thing. And the word for that quality is grace.”—Scott McLemee, Inside Higher Ed (Scott McLemee Inside Higher Ed)

“With this sweeping and enjoyable work the author affirms that deliberating on reality and questioning how our lives are best lived is still worth the trouble.”—PopMatters (PopMatters)

“The magic of Nigel Warburton’s book is its disarming accessibility. It closely follows the template of ‘A Little History Of The World’ – Ernst Gombrich’s 1935 introductory text for children, recently translated by Yale – and Warburton is the ideal shout for a writer to match Gombrich’s terse charm and easy authority. Anyone who’s enjoyed Warburton’s brilliant podcast series, ‘Philosophy Bites’, where he and fellow demystifier David Edmonds half-nelson academics into spelling out their their theories, will know he has a special gift for defusing complexity.”—Chris Brown, Time Out (Chris Brown Time Out 2011-11-17)

“If you are looking for a book about philosophy, Nigel Warburton’s A Little History of Philosophy is the place to begin…Accessible, funny and informative.”—Sacramento News and Review (Sacramento News and Review)

“Survey the entire history of (western) philosophy through short intellectual biographies of 40 philosophers from Socrates to Peter Singer, in as broadly approachable a style as EH Gombrich’s A Little History of the World. A tall order; that Warburton (of the excellent podcast Philosophy Bites) has succeeded so well is a triumph.”—Steven Poole, The Guardian (Steven Poole The Guardian 2011-11-12)

"This is a thought-provoking and engaging introduction to philosophy, sweeping through over 2000 years of Western philosophical ideas… The core ideas are clearly described with engaging anecdotal elaborations, both visual and written, which reveal to the reader the real people behind the concepts."—Good Book Guide (Good Book Guide 2012-11-01)

"Forty short chapters offer an informative, clear guide to forty major Western philosophers. Warburton’s casual, conversational style belies the erudition that has gone into his book." —Katie Owen, The Sunday Telegraph (Katie Owen The Sunday Telegraph 2012-12-02)

From the Author
Why did you write this book?

Philosophy is one of the most stimulating and important subjects there is. We all philosophize some of the time when we think about how we should live, whether or not God exists, or how society should be organized. These questions have vexed the greatest minds for thousands of years. Yet some people are still daunted by philosophy. They think it's an impenetrable and obscure subject that has no relevance for them. I wanted to show this isn't true, that it's possible to write an accessible and enjoyable book without betraying the spirit of the great thinkers of the past or making them obscure or irrelevant. I decided to focus on the Western tradition in philosophy and on one or two key ideas from each philosopher discussed rather than attempt an encyclopedic overview.

How is making philosophy accessible to all a challenge?

Part of the challenge of writing a book like this was to keep the language straightforward. Many philosophers have introduced complex technical terms that make their writing hard to follow. It's easy to fall into the habit of mirroring them. Writing in a way that doesn't presuppose knowledge is an excellent discipline, though, as there's no place to hide.

Which philosophers do you personally find most engaging?

Socrates, the great fifth-century Athenian philosopher who would cross-question passersby in the marketplace and reveal how little they really knew, is one of my personal favourites. His unwillingness to accept assumptions, and his passion for discovering the truth or, failing that, how little he knew, provide a model for all philosophers. Although he wasn't the first philosopher, he was the first great philosopher. He of all the philosophers in the book is the one I'd most like to have met. My second choice would be the eighteenth-century philosopher David Hume, a remarkable thinker who was also a superb writer.

What are the major themes of your book?

A Little History of Philosophy focuses on the major themes of philosophy: appearance and reality, the nature of the self, and questions about God's existence and about how we should live, both individually and as members of society. Throughout philosophy's history these have been the perennial themes. Each era gives them a new twist, but they aren't going to go away.

For neophytes only
By dcreader
Reading Nigel Warburton's A Little History of Philosophy makes me appreciate even more (if that is possible) EH Gombrich's A Little History of the World. In about 300 pages, Gombrich relayed just about every event of significance in world history in an erudite, extraordinarily humane way. His book has been in print for so long and in so many languages, it has inspired an attempt to do the same for philosophy. Unfortunately, Warburton's efforts fall short in many respects, despite providing a delightful entre for true neophytes.

A Little History of Philosophy tries to accomplish its task by breaking the development of philosophy up into 40 chapters, each focused on one or two philosophers. Each contains some brief biographical material and a discussion of one or two ideas associated with him or her. After reading A Little History, a reader will know the "big names" and become familiar with some of the more interesting questions and ideas raised over the millennia since Socrates hectored his fellow Athenians about what they really understood and believed. Warburton is careful to illustrate philosophical concepts in a manner that assumes no prior knowledge of philosophy.

More specifically, he covers both the famous (e.g. Plato, Aristotle, Kant, etc.) and some lesser known figures to the general public (Spinoza, Pierce, Foot, etc.), and includes even the most modern thinkers such as Rawls and Singer. His concept of "philosophy" is broad enough to cover ethics, political philosophy, economic philosophy, theology, ontology, and even some philosophy of science. He generally tries to pair different approaches or variations (e.g., Bentham and Mill on utilitarianism). A true beginner will certainly finish the book knowing a good deal more than she did when she started, is unlikely to be confused, and will likely be inspired to take a "deeper dive" into those topics or philosophers she found most engaging. This is the good news. Those who are even a little better versed in philosophy, however, will find less of interest.

Even assuming the book is geared towards beginners, though, Warburton could have done even better in certain respects. He fails to introduce readers to the basic vocabulary of philosophy in many cases. A glossary at the end would be helpful. Opportunities to compare one philosopher's views on a particular subject with another are sometimes missed. And, in some cases, Warburton chooses a particularly odd concept to discuss in a chapter. For example, a reader will not learn anything about John Locke's Second Treastise of Government and Locke's views on the contractual nature of government and the consent of the governed. Curiously, Warburton chooses to focus on Locke's views on memory and humanity. The political philosophy of Rousseau is well presented, however, and one wishes Warburton had paired him with Edmund Burke in a chapter that covered both views on 18th century political developments. He omits Peter Singer's most controversial thesis altogether (that perhaps we should permit the killing of severely disabled newborns) despite the point of his final chapter being that philosophy is still a vital force in forcing us to rethink the comfortably familiar.

In sum, A Little History is best left to those looking for a gentle introduction to philosophy in general, with readers looking for depth in any particular subject better off elsewhere.

Nice, Brief, Well-written
By Hugh Sansom
This book is clearly intended to trade on the popularity of E.H. Gombrich's "A Little History of the World".

Warburton is impressively thorough for such a short book. One might gripe that he really only covers western philosophy or that he neglects the role of language, logic, and philosophy of mathematics in 20th century anglophone philosophy, but those are very minor points. This is not intended to be a deep, philosophical treatise. It's a survey for the curious, and it does _really_ well for that.

One reviewer offers a blinkered hissy fit over Warburton's coverage of arguments for the "existence of god" and Bertrand Russell. That thread of thought is _minimal_ in western philosophy, of interest largely to religious fanatics who can't bear the idea that anyone doesn't take their dogma as an article of faith. Take it how you like, that reviewer's points about the book utterly miss the point.

If you're curious about philosophy and particularly if you know a young person who might get a kick out of philosophical thinking, this is a fine book.

Brief but sweet
By Jesse
Considering this book is not intended to be a long in depth piece of literature, neither will my review. This book may be the greatest source of elementary knowledge as it relates to philosophy. At just over 240 pages of text, this book paints a brilliant picture of what philosophy was, is, and may become. With 40 chapters, making each about 6 pages in length, philosophy is briefly summarized through many different philosophers. Every chapter is clearly tied to the next, with mostly fluent transitions. My biggest gripe is that the book was simply to shallow for me personally, however the adequate references to specific works has allowed me to learn more at my own wish.
