Truthfully, I am a dreadful realist with a citadel heart. But the hallmark of the most avid readers is that from time-to-time they dare venture into unknown literature territory. And hear you me, dear reader, romantic fiction is to me as unfamiliar a terrain as the thickest of Amazonian jungles.

Throughout my adventure into the world of "Beneath the Mulberry Tree" I found my emotions being subjected to such sorrow-- and likewise charmed captivation-- that I found myself pausing to place my chin into the palm of my hand whilst I gazed into the space around me, not quite able to go on.

As you cross the boundaries of Chapter Eight you find your perspective changed--Jimmy's decisions are now your own; your heart slowly willing itself to acceptance much like Myrna's heart must have done. Every great story faces the challenge of transforming the reader into a character, there are no guides on how to do this. Either the author succeeds in this task. Or they don't.

Jennifer, if I sit beneath this mulberry tree any longer you'll make a romantic of me yet.

The one thing I learned: Memento mori, etiam in morte, superest amor. (Remember that you must die, but in death, love survives.)

Good companion to have if you are building on spring framework.

If you are looking for a book to understand and code in spring framework this is the book for you. It provides in-depth understanding of spring framework with ample examples to build good understanding of the framework. It uses UML and sequence diagrams to set the context for various examples. All the examples are for spring version 4.3. It covers both basics of spring like bean configurations, dependency injection and advanced topics like data binding, RESTful web services, spring security ( good read to setup spring security correctly) and introduces new concepts like java based configuration, spring data jpa. Author maintains a good pace and keep a practical approach towards development and learning of spring framework. It also provides information to setup your development environment and deployment setup - really helpful when you are setting up a project from scratch.

This book does not leave any stone unturned. I've watched videos and read other books trying to get a good grasp of the subject and this book makes sure you do not miss ANY detail. I started to read this book before bed, big mistake! It put me to sleep - not because of the writing style but because there is so much detail covered in every sentence. Make sure you have time to pay attention.
Other reviews mention they don't like the small code snippets. But the code snippets that are shown have plenty of context AND are contained in full working projects which are downloaded from the authors site. The book even tells you when to load it up if you want to see it in action.
Great book if you don't want to miss a thing.

I have few years of experience in Java but fairly new to Spring. I found the book to be very useful. It is a code heavy book that explains concepts using sample projects. I liked the way authors explain complex Spring concepts by starting with requirements of a banking application.

it is great that author is utilizing some great tech from the ...

I really want to give this book five stars, but it has two significant drawbacks. First off, it is absolutely clear that the author is deeply knowledgeable about the subject matter & the tech involved. Also, the author's approach is rock solid in my opinion; I am a big fan of using projects to learn underlying tech. Finally, it is great that author is utilizing some great tech from the PyData world & the Spark world.

The drawbacks, however, are significant. First, the code as presented (at least in the ebook) is in serious need of formatting. The way that the code is presented adds an unnecessary layer of confusion. I'm all for iteratively updating the code as we proceed, but it has to be clear what is happening. The lack of good formatting just tripped me up.

Second, it is not clear that this book was well edited. The author does a great job not assuming much prior knowledge and does a great job in explaining concepts, jargon, and acronyms. I also like the graphics used to visualize ideas and architecture. There are, however, inconsistencies. One example that jumps to mind is in Chapter 3 when shifting from writing the scripts to harvesting data from Twitter (scripts that do not seem to have been tested) to experimenting with Blaze. At the end of "Harvesting and storing data" section it seems as though we will be working with the JSON data, but when we start the "Exploring data using Blaze" section the author is using csv data.

These inconsistencies in the book are huge drawbacks. The blame here should reside with the publisher, since the author has compiled some great material with a great approach to learning the subject matter. If these two drawbacks were fixed, I would happily up this book to 5 stars.

Edit: Why isn't the code available online? Github & Bitbucket both have free public repos. Doesn't make much sense nowadays.

About everything and nothing in particular.

I hoped to learn some details about how to work with Spark in Python, and was disappointed. The author knows some Databases, SQL, some Python, but not too much about Spark. It was a waste of money.

The book is about everything and nothing in particular. Put together some basic principles, some general talk, some screen shots, some diagrams, some Python code, some Twitter API examples, plus wide margins, and you collect enough pages to make a book. Add hot topic "Spark" to the title, and here you are, you have a publication.

This is just terrible.

I don't often leave reviews but I just felt compelled to do so with this book. Here are just a few of my thoughts:
1) The code examples are unreadable.
2) The author skims over important topics in order to squeeze more topics in.
3) The author skims over important details in setting up the environments he describes.
4) Very little of the first few chapters actually deal with Spark, except for some brief examples that are not explained in detail.
Summary: The editors should have taken more time to make sure this is a quality publication. This is just terrible.

An Excellent Introductory Text

Since there is currently only one other review, which I find very inaccurate, I will throw in my 2 cents.

First of all, I disagree about the readability of Artin's book. I found the presentations crystal clear, and in particular the proofs are very readable. Artin avoids clever tricks when a straightforward approach is available and does a good job explaining the reasoning behind proofs. There are also enough examples to illustrate the concepts presented.

Second, the exercises in Artin are excellent. They provide a way to become familiar with the definitions and techniques in the chapter, as well as illustrate some interesting applications of the material. There are some easy exercises, and some very difficult ones. I'm not sure what more you could ask for.

As far as Dummit and Foote goes, I agree that it is an excellent text. However, I would prefer Artin as an introductory text, since it is a gentler introduction to all the abstraction. Dummit and Foote is a better for a course beyond an introduction, and also serves as a better reference. Anyway, Artin covers a different set of topics than more "standard" texts such as Dummit and Foote, such as plane symmetries and linear groups.

Overall, I think Artin's book is an excellent introduction to abstract algebra. In fact, the two semester course using Artin that I took (taught by the man himself), was one of the best academic experiences of my life.

Good, challenging book

I used this book in an advanced algebra course in which the students learned on their own with minimal guidance from the professor and discussed the assigned readings and homework once a week. I found this book difficult for self-learning. Artin aims for concision in his proofs, making the reader prove some things on his own. This is not necessarily bad, and is often very helpful for the student's learning. But it can be tough and frustrating if you need a hint, or get lost in a proof. In other words, it's perfectly good to leave steps for the reader, provided that the reader can actually fill in the gaps. For that reason, I think this book is best used as a supplement to a professor's lectures, rather than for self-learning. This book does a good job of condensing the material, and the theorems are easy to find, so it is useful when reviewing. I like the topics in the book. One of the aims of this book is to introduce the reader to the various applications of algebra. To this end Artin includes not only the typical algebra material, but also symmetry and imaginary quadratic fields. Unfortunately I found the second edition worse than the first edition in its chapters on fields. Artin took out many examples in the first edition, for reasons I don't know. The chapter on fields is full of definitions and theorems, but in my mind it doesn't elucidate the main ideas and themes effectively. I think Dummit and Foote is much better at explaining basic Galois theory. The exercises, though, are very good. Overall, this is a challenging book; when used effectively in a well-taught course (for example, see Benedict Gross's excellent free online videos on algebra), it should prove to be very rewarding.

Good bargain, but one chapter missing

Cheaper version printed in India (nothing wrong with that). Warning: the book does not include the last chapter on Galois Theory, so this version is shorter (482 pages instead of 543 pages in the regular 2nd edition). Too bad. Other than that, a good bargain.

This book is so badly edited that it is distracting. The author consistently uses language incorrectly and inaccurately where simpler more concise statements would suffice. Reading this book feels like translating rough English to English. It shouldn't be published yet.

It is quite generic and only uses Yocto Project to illustrate the concepts which is great for beginners

This is book gives an overview of the full embedded Linux system integration, from the bootloader to the application. It is quite generic and only uses Yocto Project to illustrate the concepts which is great for beginners. A good follow up for in depth coverage is "Embedded Linux Development with Yocto Project" and will fit more advanced developers.

This is *not* an Yocto Project's book. It is a Embedded Linux book yocto project flavored. And it is a very well explained embedded linux book.

The content is for beginners, as it explain some basic concepts, and introduce very well why it's different to work with embedded linux. And having all this embedded world flavored with Yocto Project's tools is really the best.
