The mineral evaluator has that peculiar necessity of requiring knowledge equally in the two fields of his discipline: the physical science that explains minerals and the financial science that arranges the numbers describing their configuration.

This is a good introduction to financial side of the discipline of evaluating mineral resources. The concepts are described from scratch with great lucidity. Abstruse concepts of the financial apparatus are given a commonsensical turn which deftly assist the understanding. Methods of valuation which rely on geological and minerological investigations are unfortunately sparsely treated or absent.

For a quick introduction to the subject, one that is easy to understand and thorough on the financial side of mineral appraisal, I do recommend this book.

Selfish No More

I live it is crazy how often we can get cough up in our own life's and forget to think about others. Maybe a little brother or friend in need. We really need to put yourself in other peoples shoes more often and think what would we want if we where them. This book will shed some incite on selfishness and provide some good advice and different ways you can improve your character and become a better person! I recommend this book to everyone because improving yourself in positive way can be life changing.

This book is pretty helpful - I know someone who struggles with selfishness (actually we all do to some degree), so this book really helped me understand the causes and effects of selfishness. In the book different topics are covered like how to deal with selfishness, looking deep inside yourself to uncover selfishness, how to stop being selfish, etc. Overall, I’d recommend reading this to anyone who needs to deal with it or who knows someone who struggles with selfishness.

Confusing explainations/Not Clear

This book was not written very clearly and had too many grammatical mistakes that my instructor had to point out so that the students would not be confused. I found this to be a very confusing read, the author did NOT explain concepts well. The author struggles to explain debits and credits clearly (and messes up on her chart page 179). The only good thing is that it is focused on New York regulations and up to date (2014-current). Not Recommended.

About the Author
John Ridley is the Malcolm McCallum Chair of Economic Geology at Colorado State University where he has taught ore deposit geology and field geology for the past seven years. His earlier academic positions spanned three other continents, with positions at universities in Australia, Switzerland and Zimbabwe, and over his career he has taught courses in geochemistry, petrology and structural geology. Professor Ridley has published over seventy articles in refereed journals and books, in addition to geological maps and reports for companies and groups within the mining and minerals industries.

Very well executed

A clear and concise up-to-date explanation of ore types and geochemical formation processes. The author carefully organizes and summarizes information without delving too far into poorly-supported alternatives, yet does not fail to mention secondary factors that may play a role. The result is a text full of relevant, organized information, and very little of the tedium that crops up somewhere in most texts. Professor Ridley also eschews informative geochemical diagrams like those showing stability of iron and manganese sulfides, oxides, and carbonates, which might be considered a fault; but these diagrams require a lot of expert interpretation and a grasp of relevance to actual contexts so the author provides the interpretation instead. Even the descriptions and maps of actual deposits around the world appear to have been carefully filtered to best exemplify the processes (rather than simply using the most thoroughly studied locations).

Outstanding text on Ore Formations.

This is a very comprehensive book on ore formations. The sections on hydrothermal processes is exceptional and exhaustive. While well written, to fully gain the knowledge contained, it has to read several times. There is a lot of information presented which takes a bit of effort to absorb. This is a must read for anyone trying to understand the genesis and morphology of economic minerals.

Upper Dolpo | A beautiful portrayal of one of the Nepal Himalaya's most remote regions!

A wonderful book of photos and text whether you are going to Nepal to trek in Upper Dolpo or an armchair Himalayan traveler! Leo's wonderful photos of the region and Dolpo-pa (local people) really bring remote Dolpo, a remote border region of Nepal and Tibet, to life. The commentary from Peter Matthiessen's "The Snow Leopard" adds further depth to the book; a virtual trip through one of Nepal's most far-flung regions.

I was privileged to lead Leo Montejo on his Dolpo trek with Kamzang Journeys through this special region of high lakes and passes, remote villages, welcoming Dolpo inhabitants, snow leopards, blue sheep and Tibetan Buddhist chortens and monasteries. One of the Himalaya's hidden 'beyuls', or sacred sanctuaries, that most people will never be able to visit because of the challenges of getting there.

This is a book to keep on your coffee table for a long time!

The 'Snow Leopard' through the eyes of a camera

I was fortunate enough to be on the trek with Leo when he retraced George Schaller and Peter Matthiessen's journey through Upper Dolpo in Nepal. Leo's book is a testament to the meticulous detail and energy that he exhibited throughout the trek in searching for what he felt Schaller and Matthiessen would have seen and experienced during their trip back in September of 1973.
Leo's pictures work wonderfully to bring to life the words of Schaller and Matthiesson, giving the reader a real sense of understanding of what the region is like and how difficult it must have been for those two men back in the early 70's when they didn't have the comforts that Leo and his fellow travellers had.
Anyone who has read the 'Snow Leopard' or who has trekked or dreamed of trekking this region would love this book.

A muddle with a lot to be desired.

So, I have a fairly good background in higher Math, including a year of Calculus. I have been researching good math books for young people who are having problems are would benefit from a decent intro to the various upper level subjects before they become buried in equations. Concerning the Manga Guide, I find that a reader would greatly benefit from already having had at least a fair intro. to the Calculus in order to avoid becoming quickly swamped in otherwise meaningless equations. I found this book was created with good intentions but is rather muddled and skips a good deal of explanatory material. Difficult to follow if you are unable to fill in the gaps (again, requiring a background in the subject). I know Japanese and actually enjoy Manga but this simply isn't the answer to a potential student but more like a review (and not even a good review) of the subject. The book is not all together useless but I just don't think it accomplishes its objective. I tell you what: the best book of its kind is _Calculus Made Easy_, originally authored by Silvanus Thompson and edited by Martin Gardner. The book is over 250 pages but offers what I consider the best, most concise, detailed intro. to the Calculus I have been able discover. It offers a logical, step-for-step instruction accompanied by plenty of easy but instructive exercises. Anyhoo , that's my advice.

A newer perspective

This book does a good job of explaining core concepts in an interesting and much more friendly way than most textbooks. It doesn't go into the details as deeply as a dry textbook might, but it does a very good job of explaining what the equations are actual doing, from a real world (manga?) perspective, something that most textbooks ignore completely.

This book will likely help you if you are having conceptual hangups in your calculus class, but don't expect it to replace your text book, it simply doesn't provide that kind of bulk material.

Good Calculus Help for Teens

Purchased this book for a amime addicted teenager who is struggling in Calculus. We had tried other Calculus help books in the past, but she wasn't interested in them and they did not help. Since she is very interested in reading Manga (she chose the words anime addicted), this book captured her interest and helped to explain topics that were difficult for her to grasp. She has since raised her grade in the class.

A good introduction.

"The Elements of Reasoning" offers a good introduction to using logic as a basis for making arguments. If you want to improve your skills of debate, or familiarize yourself with Aristotlian rules of rhetoric, this is the book for you. I read it and enjoyed it, although much of it was familiar and a bit obvious. I think even an observant viewer of Sunday morning political shows will be familar with the techniques covered -- inventions, conjectures, definitions, as well as the age old structures of syllogisms and enthymemes. If you are already familiar with such things, no need to read this book.

A must-read for effective writers

In one of the better courses I ever took in college, taught by Eberly, this text provided a solid foundation for understanding the nature of arguments, and how to pose them effectively in public discourses. Eberly is a master at encouraging stimulating conversation in the classroom, and her revisions to Corbett's elite style will cause relief for the student reader. Forming the perfect argument, especially when it is designed for the proto-public space, is a necessary skill, and this text will provide the user with ample guidance in persuasive reasoning.

Slouching Towards the M-16

Few weapons have been as controversial as the AR-15/M-16/M-4 rifle/carbine. Designed by Eugene Stoner in 1957, it became the U.S. Army's issue weapon in 1967, amid great controversy over its reliability as a rifle, and the effectiveness of it's .223 cartridge. In becoming the standard rifle of the Army, it displaced the M-14, whose design had begun near the end of WWII, and which had been adopted as standard in 1959.

What happened? How and why did the U.S. Army take 14 years to design a relatively small variant on the M-1 Garand, whose three great improvements were to be detachable box magazine, full automatic capability, and a slightly shorter cartridge? Why, having done so, did they give the whole thing up as a bad idea almost as soon as it was used in combat? And how did a private design by the then unknown Eugene Stoner become the basis for the rifle the U.S. military is still using a half-century later?

Edward Ezell details the whole pathetic story, showing how the M-14's design process accomodated every possible goal except battlefield performance in the hands of the average soldier, and respect for the law of conservation of momentum; how a group of dissidents in the Army's Operational Research Office came up with the idea of the small-caliber, high-velocity full-auto rifle; and how Eugene Stoner's AR-15 design was mangled by the U.S. Army. A group of painfully sincere men, all concentrating on narrow facets of a large and complicated problem, succeeded in creating a mess that got U.S. soldiers killed on the battlefield, and resulted in a decidedly less than optimum design for a rifle and cartridge.

If you're interested in the history of the M-16, U.S. arms procurement, or the way in which interest groups can interact to produce a disaster while trying to do their best, this book is for you. But if you find this boring, fuggedaboudit.

THE LONG MARCH TO THE M-16

This is a review of THE GREAT RIFLE CONTROVERSY: [THE] SEARCH FOR THE ULTIMATE INFANTRY WEAPON FROM WORLD WAR II THROUGH VIETNAM AND BEYOND by Edward Clinton Ezell. Mine is the hardcover edition published in 1984 by Stackpole Books of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It runs 344 pages including an informative "Foreword" by Eugene M. Stoner who designed the M-16, thorough end notes and a helpful index. The book lacks a bibliography, but the sources are well enough identified in the notes to allow interested readers to track them down. The book is well illustrated by black and white photographs, diagrams and technical drawings.

Ezell won't replace Shakespeare, but he writes well and demonstrates a mastery of the field. He should, he was the Curator of the Division of Armed Forces History at the National Museum of the American History of the Smithsonian. He's also a well-known author of articles and books on the development of modern firearms including one of the best books on Soviet small arms, THE AK 47 STORY: EVOLUTION OF THE KALASHNIKOV WEAPONS published in 1986, also by Stackpole. This was a major accomplishment becaase Ezell's research was done during the Cold War without access to Soviet archives and Russian cooperation.

I've never been a big fan of the M-16 or its many variants despite their light weight, accuracy and lack of significant recoil. Stoner selected a system developed by Ljungman in Sweden and MAS in France which uses gas to cycle the action directly without relying upon an operating rod, like Kalashnikov and others. This is elegant and produces an arm which is lighter weight and has fewer parts than other designs, but can cause serious problems for soldiers in dirty environments when fouling and battlefield filth clog the gas tube. Soldiers and Marines were found dead in Vietnam with their M-16s in pieces because they were trying to clear the jams under fire. Eugene Stoner, the system's designer, warned the military to avoid using ball propellants designed for .30 arms, but lost out to faceless bureaucrats hoping to pinch pennies by using up vast stocks of the older propellants.

The military added a "forward assist" permitting soldiers to lock the bolt into firing position manually, but also adding weight and complexity to the firearm. The M-16, in shorter form, continues to serve in 2013 and improved propellants, chromed barrels and chambers and other refinements have improved the gun's reliability to the point where most troops trust it and refer to its Kalashnikov adversaries as "junk."

The ins and outs of all this are described in detail by Ezell. This is a great book, but it's getting difficult to find. If you run across one at a reasonable price, buy it. It's a great reference on the M-16/M-4 family of small arms and how they came to be the basic arm of the American soldier from Vietnam to date.

A great "road trip" history

This is a well written "history" of small arms development in the USA in the 2nd half of the last century. If you own an M1, M1A and some civilian variant of the M16 you'll enjoy this. Its a quick read but touches on enough depth to make me go find some of the sources used. I wish there was a better bibliography but that's a very minor shortcoming. The timeline ends circa 1985 just after the adoption of the M16A2. I'd like to see a second edition that brings us up to date - especially with the subject being the news again - "what's going to replace the M4 carbine?" Pricey when you can find it but if you have a library of American small arms this book belongs in it - right next to those by Julian Hatcher.
