What's up with this child? That'sthe question my husband and I kept asking ourselves. He was a delightful babywho loved to be in his bouncy chair, laughed merrily every time the wind kickedup, and smacked his toy drum harder than any of the other kids in his babymusic class. Yet for all our bright-eyed optimism, we had concerns. At theplayground, a siren would send him into a mini-trance and I couldn't get hisattention until the emergency vehicle passed. He said Mama and Dada at sixmonths and his first sentence at fourteen months, but seemed to lose vocabularywords as soon as he gained them.
Although my pediatrician finally agreed to order atest to see why my son wasn't hitting his language milestones, it was a mom onlinewho told me not to wait--to get a multidisciplinary evaluation through mystate's early intervention program. That's how I came to meet my coauthor,Lindsey Biel, OTR/L, the occupational therapist assigned to help my son withfine motor delays (Why did he need to know how to hold a crayon already? I asked)and something they were calling sensory processing issues (What on earth did wasthat? I wondered).
Lindsey, as it turns out, not only had expertiseand experience in treating sensory processing issues: She also had anincredible rapport with kids and with parents. And she knew how to explain whysensory processing issues were involved in my son's unusual behaviors and hisdevelopmental delays. I urged her to help me write the book I needed to readand she wanted to be able to recommend to her clients and to other OTs andprofessionals trying to figure out how to help kids with this common conditionthat affects as many as 1 in 10 children.

About the Author
Lindsey Biel, M.A., OTR/L is a pediatric occupational therapist with a private practice in New York City. She works with children, teens, and young adults with sensory processing disorder, autism spectrum disorders, developmental delays, learning challenges, and other issues.
Nancy Peske is a freelance writer and co-author of the Cinematherapy series. She lives with her husband and son, who has sensory processing issues.
Dr. Temple Grandin (foreword), is one of the most accomplished and well- known adults with autism in the world. She has a Ph.D. in animal science and is a professor at Colorado State University. She is the author of several books on autism and animal science.

BEST Sensory Book ever!

Having read all the books in this genre, I'm particualarly impressed with this one written by Lindsey Biel and nancy Peske. The book is PACKED with information and I find myself using it often as a reference.
The authors start with understaning your child (and I find this helps understand yourself and family too!). They explain the seven senses in detail and how and why their functioning is important and how their senses alter their behavior.
The next section is about working with Occupational Therapists and how YOU can help your child at home, in school and in the community. They go through EVERYTHING; from eating (at home and in restaurants - including special feeding issues!), potty training, the dreaded birthday parties and family get togethers, and much more...
How to decorate and make your house more sensory friendly is explored as well as how to advocate for your child in their school. It's seriously a one stop shop book. There is too much info for me to list - it's all in there.
The writers are clear and discriptive, making a sometimes difficult subject matter easy to understand and apply to your every day life.
A MUST READ section is "Quick Tips for Calming an Overwhelmed Child." Thank you, thank you, thank you for this priceless advise. This book is fabulous!
