Grumman F8F Bearcat (Naval Fighters), by Steve Ginter

By the last half of World War II, most new US fighter designs were much heavier and more complex than earlier fighters. When planning a replacement for their successful F6F Hellcat carrier fighter, however, Grumman chose to build as lightweight a design as possible around the most reliable large radial engine. The result was the F8F Bearcat, which was often called a "hot rod" by its pilots for its fantastic acceleration and climbing ability.

Using the well-proven Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine, the first Bearcat prototype flew on August 21, 1944. After minor modifications, including the addition of a dorsal fin, early production F8F-1s began armament tests and carrier qualification trials in early 1945. By May of 1945, the Bearcat was cleared for operations, with very few restrictions on its flight operations over its wide speed range. A total of 654 F8F-1s were delivered, all fitted with the 2,100 hp R-2800-34W engine.

Shows up the weaknesses of the Naval Fighters line...
By Jim Davis
Had this book only been the first 72 pages with the appropriate price I would have given it 5 stars with no hesitation. As a 72 page stapled softcover it would have worked well.

Unfortunately, its three times that size, a 216 page square bound card cover volume. At this size you expect much more and Ginter really can't deliver the goods. This particular volume highlights the weaknesses of the Ginter outfit:

1.) Limited ability to produce original graphics (line drawings, color profiles, etc.)

2.) Color limited to front and rear covers.

3.) Limited ability to research foreign use of US aircraft. This is particularly frustrating in this case because the F8F only saw combat with other nations.

Instead of the above we have 140 odd pages of primarily photographic coverage of all the units the F8F served with. Nothing wrong with this, of course, but much of the text would have worked better in tabular form. Also, we are provided with detailed accident records of each unit. One gets the impression that the F8F was a particularly dangerous aircraft. It would have been nice if some context could have been provided, comparing the safety record of the F8F with other aircraft.

But I don't want to give the impression that this is a *bad* book. It's not. What's there is quite good. Author "Corky" Meyer's reminiscences of the F8F origins and testing are quite fascinating. The detailed photographic coverage is well up to Ginter standards. It's just that expectations go up with page count and price.

This falls far short of being the definitive book on the F8F but well worth having for the enthusiast.
